Role Overview

A house supervisor looks after the students when they are not in lessons or doing activities. House supervisors wake students up in the morning, supervise them at mealtimes, ensure they are safe and well on-site, and that they obey the school rules, including going to bed and remaining in their rooms after curfew. This is a pastoral care role with responsibility for students’ well-being and safety.

Camp Location & Dates

  • Oxford: 2nd July – 13th August 2025, International House Oxford, St Edward’s School (12-17 year olds)
  • Frensham: 9th July – 13th August, International House Frensham, Frensham Heights School, Frensham Heights Road, Rowledge, GU104EA (8-17 year olds)

Contract

1–6 weeks, depending on operational needs. The role requires up to 48 hours per week, typically spread over a 6 day week, with 1 full day off per week.

Key Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities of all summer staff

  • Actively promote and safeguard the welfare of all students
  • Create and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment
  • Stay vigilant and report any concerns about student well-being to appropriate staff members
  • Understand and adhere to all child protection and safeguarding policies

Pastoral Care and Student Support

  • Provide emotional support and guidance to students adjusting to a new environment
  • Collaborate with other staff members to address individual student needs

Professional Conduct

  • Follow instructions and directives from line managers (Welfare Manager and CM) promptly and professionally
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by maintaining a cooperative and respectful attitude
  • Be flexible and willing to take on additional responsibilities as assigned by your line managers
  • Adhere to all IHL Young Learners policies, procedures, and codes of conduct

Duties and responsibilities of House supervisor

  • Ensure students are keeping their bedrooms clean and tidy
  • Wake students up between 7-7.30am
  • Ensure student has taken any medication, cream, etc (if applicable)
  • Supervise students who are unwell and not attending lessons
  • Report any concerning behaviour to Welfare manager
  • Hold house meetings every evening at 10pm
  • Check students are in their rooms for lights out at 11pm
  • Attend welfare meetings for updated information students require
  • Ensure all students are present
  • Check in with any students who have been upset
  • Engage any quieter or shy students

Transfer days

  • Attend staff meeting prior to transfer day
  • Ensure you have updated list of students in your boarding house
  • Check rooms of departing students prior to departure – inform centre administrator if any deposits for damage should be withheld
  • Show new students to their rooms
  • Make sure students are welcomed warmly

Essential Requirements

  • Educated to GCSE standard (minimum 5 A*-C, including English and Maths).
  • Proficient English speaker.
  • IT literate.
  • Strong administrative and multitasking skills.
  • Customer service or administrative experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a residential environment or in an educational institution.
  • Experience of working with teenagers and young people.
  • Ability to speak additional languages.
  • Experience with financial administration (petty cash, receipts, and payments).
  • Safeguarding training.
