About Us
At International House London (IH London), we are passionate about languages and teaching. With over 60 years of experience, we are one of the UK’s most established language schools and a founding member of the International House World Organisation. Every year, we welcome over 8,000 students from 150 countries, creating a vibrant, multicultural learning environment.
But it’s not just our students who value us. Our teachers do too:
“I love the cultural and language diversity at IH London.”
“Communication in the foreign languages department is brilliant. The team is approachable, organised, and supportive.”
“The department is very well-run. The administrative staff are responsive, efficient, and friendly. A great place to work.”
Why work with us?
Here’s why many teachers choose to work at IH London:
- Academic structure that supports you: You’ll teach from a clear syllabus with good resources, so you can focus on teaching rather than reinventing the wheel.
- Continuity with your students: Once you’re assigned a group, you’ll usually move up the levels with them and see how far they come.
- Engaged adult learners: Our students are motivated young professionals, mostly in their 20s and 30s, so lessons are lively and purposeful.
- Teach from home: All lessons are live and online, so there’s no commute.
- Freelance flexibility: You’ll work under a contractor agreement and fit our classes around your other work.
- Development opportunities: Access to IH training, workshops and a global teaching network.
The role
We’re looking for an experienced Dutch teacher to join our Foreign Languages team on a freelance basis. You’ll teach live online lessons to adults:
- Group classes: weekday evenings, 18:30 to 20:00
- One-to-one lessons: at times agreed with you and the student
What you’ll do
- Teach communicative Dutch lessons online to adult learners
- Plan lessons that follow IH syllabi and suit your learners’ levels, needs and expectations
- Keep every student involved, which takes extra care online
- Give clear, useful feedback and help students keep learning between lessons
- Advise students on their progress, level changes and next course
- Keep class registers up to date on SchoolWorks and update the department SharePoint folder with a work-done record
- Send us a monthly invoice for the lessons you’ve taught
- Follow IH London policies, the IH Code of Professional Conduct and safeguarding procedures
Essential requirements
- C2 proficiency in Dutch
- Strong English communication skills
- Recognised teaching qualification in Dutch
- At least 5 years’ experience teaching groups of adults
- Experience teaching live online lessons (e.g. on Zoom or Microsoft Teams)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level 6 qualification
- A reliable internet connection, a computer with a webcam and headset, and a quiet place to teach
- Able to work under a contractor agreement and send monthly invoices
- Able to work independently and organise your own workload
Desirable
- Degree in Dutch language education, languages or applied linguistics
- Familiarity with the CEFR and Dutch proficiency exams (e.g. CNaVT, Staatsexamen NT2)
- Availability for one-to-one lessons during the day
Pay & Benefits
- £33 per hour, invoiced monthly
- Access to IH professional development
- Support from an experienced academic team
Recruitment Process
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview, which includes:
- A short online demo lesson
- A formal interview
This is a freelance role. You’ll work under a contractor agreement rather than as an employee, so you’ll be responsible for your own tax. Hours are not guaranteed and depend on student bookings. We’ll offer you classes as they come up and confirm the hours for each one in advance.
Before you start teaching, you’ll need to sign our contractor agreement, provide a satisfactory DBS check (or a police check from your country of residence if you live outside the UK) and complete our online safeguarding training.
If you’re an experienced Dutch teacher who enjoys teaching online, we’d love to hear from you. All candidates are required to apply via the Hireful platform. Applications are reviewed by the Hiring Manager, who will contact shortlisted candidates to arrange interviews. The closing date for applications is 20th November.
Please note that all offers are subject to two satisfactory references, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check (or a police check if you live outside the UK), completion of our safeguarding training and a signed contractor agreement.
We encourage fairness and equality in our Recruitment and selection process. Our shortlisting and interviewing will be carried out by more than one person: Internal members of the interview panels are informed about the company’s recruitment and selection of staff policy. Interview questions will be related to the requirements of the job and not of a discriminatory nature.
