The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for the maritime transport sector, which moves 90% of world trade. ICS works closely with its member national shipowners' associations in 40 countries, whose member shipping companies operate more than 80% of world merchant tonnage. Established in 1921, ICS is concerned with all regulatory issues that affect this major global industry.
To represent the interests of the world’s shipowners with their intergovernmental regulatory bodies, the ICS Secretariat administers specialist committees which determine ICS policy positions. The Shipping Policy Committee (SPC) ensures the smooth operation of shipping’s global regulatory framework and promotes free trade principles. It liaises with United Nations agencies and bodies such as the WTO and OECD to advocate for international shipping interests, as well as with key economies, such as the United States, China and the European Union.
ROLE SUMMARY:
The successful candidate will provide support to the Head of Shipping Policy and the ICS Shipping Policy Committee. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting research on various policy developments impacting the global shipping industry and global maritime trade
- Drafting advice for members
- Coordinating committee meetings
- Representing ICS at external meetings with international organisations (including the UN IMO, WTO, OECD and other fora as necessary)
- Liaising with other ICS departments and members
The role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of policy positions within this dynamic global industry, against a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. The role will involve some international travel.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK. No previous experience of shipping or trade issues is required, but the successful candidate will need to demonstrate that they are self-motivated with excellent communication and English writing skills, a strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn, with a keen interest in international affairs, politics, economics and/or global trade. Although not a requirement, experience working in a policy or advocacy role (government or private sector), and with government officials and/or intergovernmental organisations could be an advantage.
