The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the principal international trade association for merchant shipowners and operators, representing over 80% of the world’s merchant fleet. Based in London, ICS works with national shipowners’ associations and engages with governments and global regulators, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to shape policy, set standards, and promote the safe, sustainable, and efficient operation of global shipping.

As the trusted voice of the international shipping industry, ICS plays a critical role in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges, including decarbonisation, digitalisation, maritime safety, and sustainable trade.

The opportunity

ICS is seeking a Director of Communications and Public Affairs to lead its communications activities, stakeholder engagement, and global advocacy efforts.

Reporting directly to the Secretary General, this is a senior leadership role responsible for positioning ICS as the authoritative voice of the shipping industry and strengthening its influence with governments, international organisations, regulators, industry stakeholders, and the media.

You will lead a high-performing communications and public affairs team, shaping and delivering an integrated strategy that supports ICS’s mission and enhances its global reputation.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive global communications and public affairs strategy.
  • Provide strategic counsel to the Secretary General and senior leadership on messaging, positioning, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Act as a senior spokesperson for ICS at high-level international forums, conferences, and media engagements.
  • Promote ICS’s advocacy with governments, regulators, and international institutions including the IMO, ILO, UN, and WCO.
  • Oversee media relations, digital communications, publications, and crisis communications.
  • Direct communications for flagship ICS events, global summits, and policy forums.
  • Manage, mentor and develop a high-performing communications and public affairs team.

Requirements

  • Extensive senior-level experience in communications and public affairs, ideally within an international, policy-rich, or regulatory environment.
  • Proven ability to advise on policy and decision-making at the highest levels.
  • A strong track record of media relations, stakeholder engagement, and digital strategy leadership.
  • Demonstrable experience leading and motivating multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex issues into compelling narratives.
  • Deep understanding of international policy processes and global regulatory frameworks.
