The School of Computer Science & Informatics at Cardiff University invites internal candidates to join a 3‑year Leverhulme Trust funded project to develop machine‑learning methods for automated 3‑D atomic structure determination of metal nanoparticles in collaboration with the School of Chemistry.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop novel 3‑D reconstruction techniques using machine learning and deep learning models to output atomic coordinates from atomic‑resolution electron microscopy images.
- Construct, train and evaluate deep learning models on data acquired from the Spectra 200 (S)TEM at the Cardiff Catalysis Institute.
- Collaborate with chemists and electron microscopists, mainly under supervision of Dr Thomas Slater.
- Analyse and interpret experimental data, contributing to papers and presentations.
- Support the broader research programme and deliver progress reports.
Qualifications
- Completion or imminent completion of a PhD in a related area, or equivalent industrial experience.
- Strong background in machine learning, deep learning and image analysis.
- Experience with high‑resolution electron microscopy data is desirable.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.
Working Hours & Flexibility
Full‑time (35 hours per week) with blended working options – on‑campus and remote.
Contract & Salary
36‑month fixed‑term contract starting 1 September 2026 (or as soon as possible after); salary £41,064 per annum, grade 6, with annual increments up to £46,049.
