About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Toolmaker to join our established in-house Tooling team at our Bedford manufacturing site. This is a hands-on role focused on the manufacture, maintenance and repair of moulds and tooling used to produce moulded foam products for sectors including automotive, rail, aviation, and furniture. This position is well suited to an experienced Toolmaker looking for long-term stability, technically varied work, and the opportunity to play a key role in the future development and succession of our tooling function.
Key Responsibilities
- Tool & Mould Manufacture
- Produce patterns and master models from technical drawings, templates or foam samples
- Manufacture moulds using wet lay or cast resin methods
- Machine tooling using CNC (3-axis), lathes, mills and EDM (5-axis advantageous)
- Welding and fitting frames, pins and inserts
- Hand finishing and polishing moulds
- Application of paints and sealants
- Repair and modify moulds
- Diagnose tooling-related production issues
- Carry out modifications to improve quality and efficiency
- Support trials of new foam products and tooling
- Optimise venting, draft angles and parting lines
- Work with engineers and designers
- Measure and inspect tooling
- Ensure durability and repeatability
- Contribute to continuous improvement
- Liaise with Sales on tooling requirements
- Maintain a safe and organised workshop
- Follow Health & Safety procedures
Skills & Experience Required
Essential:
- Proven Toolmaker / Precision Engineer experience
- Ability to interpret technical drawings
- Experience working with wood, metals and resins
- Skilled in 3-axis CNC machining, milling, turning and welding
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills
Desirable:
- Foam or composite tooling experience
- 5-axis CNC experience
- Understanding of foam behaviours
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds or equivalent
- BTEC / HNC / HND in Engineering
- Completed apprenticeship
