The Opportunity
Interface Recruitment is working with a well-established and rapidly expanding software business in the South West, known for high-quality products and a loyal customer base. Due to continued growth, they’re looking for a Senior Progress 4GL / OpenEdge Developer to join a friendly, collaborative team working on mission-critical applications.
This is a role with real variety. You’ll be hands‑on across development, enhancements, troubleshooting and occasional customer engagement, ideal for someone who enjoys autonomy, likes seeing the impact of their work, and wants to be part of a stable business that’s scaling.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll play a key role in the ongoing development and improvement of the company’s core systems, balancing feature work with support and problem‑solving.
Key responsibilities
Develop, maintain and enhance applications using Progress 4GL / OpenEdge ABL (Progress v12 preferred).
Contribute to ongoing product improvements: requirements capture, solution design, development, and controlled delivery.
Troubleshoot and resolve application issues: log analysis, fault finding, performance diagnosis, and root‑cause fixes.
Work closely with colleagues across the business to translate customer needs into practical, scalable solutions.
Take ownership of tasks end‑to‑end, proposing improvements to code quality, performance and maintainability.
Engage with customers when needed: clarifying requirements, resolving complex issues, and supporting releases.
Occasional travel to customer sites for on‑site support or project assistance (not constant, planned where possible).
Technology environment (what you’ll work with)
This role sits in a "core product" environment-so strong engineering fundamentals matter.
Essential skills
Strong commercial experience with Progress 4GL / OpenEdge ABL (v12 preferred)
Solid database knowledge and performance awareness (data modelling, indexing concepts, query efficiency)
Strong problem‑solving capability with a proactive, ownership mindset
Confident communication skills and a genuine customer‑first approach
Desirable technical experience (highly valued)
Progress database experience: OpenEdge RDBMS, query tuning, performance troubleshooting, schema changes
Exposure to Linux/Unix environments (or willingness to work across both Windows and Unix‑like estates)
Understanding of networks and client environments (TCP/IP basics, connectivity troubleshooting, permissions)
Exposure to web technologies and modernisation work (e.g. REST APIs, JSON, web UI frameworks)
Experience using source control and release discipline (e.g. Git, branching, deployment notes)
What success looks like in the first 90-180 days
You’ll become a trusted engineer within the team-owning enhancements and resolving issues confidently.
You’ll improve stability in at least one key area through better fault diagnosis and permanent fixes.
You’ll contribute ideas to streamline delivery: clearer documentation, better testing discipline, improved release readiness checks.
You’ll build strong working relationships across the business and with key customers.
What we’re looking for
This role suits someone who:
Enjoys building and improving "core systems" that customers rely on
Is happy mixing feature delivery with troubleshooting and support
Can work independently, but thrives in a collaborative team environment
Is comfortable engaging with customers (when required) and owning outcomes
Do you have proof of your right to work in the UK?
- Yes
