Birmingham (hybrid, two office days per week) | £55,000–£62,000 depending on experience | Up to 10% bonus
We’re recruiting a Senior QA Engineer for an organisation whose technology supports the UK’s transition to low‑carbon energy. Its systems underpin complex, growing programmes, making software quality, reliability and resilience central to the work.
You’ll be the voice of quality within a Scrum team. This is a hands‑on role: you’ll shape test plans, design and run tests, develop automation, investigate defects and help engineers build quality into delivery. You’ll also mentor other QA engineers and work with a Principal QA Engineer to improve the automation framework.
The role includes:
- Designing test strategies and cases from requirements and user stories.
- Building and maintaining automated tests, with a focus on useful coverage and reliable regression testing.
- Integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines and working closely with developers to resolve defects.
- Testing beyond the expected user journey, including edge cases, performance and other non‑functional requirements.
- Managing test data, environments and clear documentation.
- Coaching colleagues and sharing practical testing approaches across the team.
We’re looking for someone with:
- Strong commercial experience in software testing and hands‑on test automation.
- Commercial experience with Java and Selenium, including use or design of a Page Object Model framework.
- A sound understanding of the software development and testing lifecycles.
- Experience of both functional and non‑functional testing.
- The ability to investigate failures thoroughly, communicate clearly with developers and mentor other QA engineers.
Experience with performance, security or accessibility testing would be useful.
The position is permanent, working 37.5 hours per week, with two days in the Birmingham office. Benefits include a bonus of up to 10%, an 8% employer pension contribution, 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, and support for professional development. Visa sponsorship is available. The successful candidate must be willing to complete a BPSS check.
If you enjoy improving how a team tests, not just adding more tests, and want your work to support a significant public purpose, we’d be pleased to speak with you.
