InterDigital is a global research and development company focused primarily on wireless, video, artificial intelligence (AI), and related technologies. We design and develop foundational technologies that enable connected, immersive experiences in a broad range of communications and entertainment products and services. We license our innovations worldwide to companies providing such products and services, including makers of wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, IoT devices, cars and other motor vehicles, and providers of cloud-based services such as video streaming.

This two‑month internship will focus on the implementation and evaluation of a novel probabilistic haptic coding approach within the MPEG haptics standard. The current MPEG haptic format enables deterministic rendering of haptic effects. InterDigital has proposed an extension introducing probabilistic haptic representations. The objective of the internship is to extend the MPEG reference software (C++) to support probabilistic representations of haptic, enabling controlled variability at rendering time. In addition to the implementation work, the intern will evaluate the proposal through objective analysis and a small‑scale user study. The internship may lead to software modules, internal demonstrators, and potentially a publication and/or patent contribution.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement probabilistic extensions in the MPEG Haptic reference software (C++).
  • Develop test content and validation tools.
  • Design and conduct a user study to assess perceptual impact.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and potential publication/patent drafting.

Qualifications:

  • Master's student (or 4th year engineering school) in Computer Science, Signal Processing, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Strong C++ programming skills.
  • Knowledge of signal processing and probability/statistics.
  • Nice to have: experience with user studies, familiarity with multimedia standards (MPEG), basic knowledge of haptics or interactive systems.
  • MSc in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Fluency in C++ and Python, video processing, computer vision, PyTorch.

Location: Rennes, France

Expected Outcomes: Software modules, potentially demos and potentially patents.
