Packaging Buyer

Salary: £55,000 – £65,000

Location: Birmingham

Role Overview

We are seeking a commercially driven Packaging Buyer to lead procurement activities across domestic and international markets. This role is responsible for managing the sourcing of packaging materials, components, and equipment, ensuring operational continuity, cost efficiency, and supplier performance.

You will oversee supplier relationships, drive cost savings, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. With experience in international sourcing—particularly from Europe and the Far East—you will lead a small team and collaborate across departments to support production planning, supplier negotiations, and strategic procurement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Procurement Strategy and Execution

  • Manage purchasing of packaging goods and materials in line with cost, quality, and delivery targets

  • Negotiate pricing, delivery terms, and exclusivity agreements with suppliers

  • Maintain optimal stock levels through consignment and onsite inventory management

  • Develop and maintain supplier relationships and identify new sourcing opportunities

Market and Product Research

  • Analyse buying trends, commodity markets, and product innovations

  • Research new materials and manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability

  • Gather customer feedback via the Sales team to inform purchasing decisions

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to import/export regulations and post-Brexit requirements

  • Monitor supplier performance, quality standards, and legal compliance

  • Resolve issues related to pricing, delivery, quality, or invoicing

Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Lead and mentor a team of two buyers

  • Work closely with Planning, Finance, Production, and Commercial teams

  • Support production planning using MPS/MRP systems

  • Contribute to key projects and continuous improvement initiatives

Process and Systems

  • Maintain accurate records and oversee contract administration

  • Drive efficiency through technology adoption and process optimisation

  • Ensure compliance with internal procurement policies and procedures

  • Promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and high standards

Health and Safety

  • Maintain a safe and organised working environment in line with HSE requirements

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience in a purchasing role within a fast-paced manufacturing environment

  • Strong understanding of import/export regulations and post-Brexit compliance

  • Proven track record of sourcing from the Far East and Europe

  • Budget management and financial acumen (margins, gross profit, discounts)

  • High attention to detail and accuracy

  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and stock management systems

  • Ability to manage time, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines

  • Experience leading a team

Desirable

  • Degree or equivalent in Business, Accounting, or Supply Chain

  • CIPS qualified or working towards certification

  • Experience with MPS/MRP planning systems

  • Knowledge of sustainability in packaging procurement.
