Role Overview:
As an Underwriting Associate, you will have direct contact with our non-standard customers through a variety of communication channels. You will use your underwriting judgement and excellent communication skills to understand customers’ individual circumstances, assess the risks presented and provide appropriate insurance solutions.
You will make underwriting decisions within your delegated authority, balancing customer needs and commercial considerations with Intelligent Insurance’s underwriting appetite, risk management requirements and regulatory obligations, including Consumer Duty and fair value.
The majority of your day-to-day role will focus on managing and making decisions on individual underwriting referrals. However, you will also be encouraged to contribute to the ongoing development of our underwriting approach by identifying opportunities to improve customer journeys, processes, documentation and underwriting guidance.
This is a development-focused role, providing the opportunity to build and broaden your technical underwriting knowledge across a range of non-standard risks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite new business and existing business within delegated authority, in line with Intelligent Insurance’s underwriting appetite, policies and profitability/growth objectives.
- Communicate underwriting decisions and terms to Sales and Customer Services Associates, or directly to customers via telephone, web and email, using strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Recognise when a risk falls outside delegated authority or underwriting appetite and elevateappropriately, providing a clear rationale and relevant supporting information.
- Provide underwriting insight and support in relation to non-disclosure investigations, including consideration of relevant requirements under CIDRA.
- Respond to underwriting queries from internal departments including Customer Services, Pricing, Product, Marketing and Risk.
- Assist with third-party policy queries from capacity providers and claims providers.
- Assist with the resolution of risk incidents and customer complaints, providing appropriate underwriting input.
- Develop strong working relationships across the business and with external partners, promoting the positive contribution of the Underwriting function.
- Continuously develop technical underwriting knowledge and capability through exposure to a broad range of non-standard risks and ongoing learning.
Experience & Skills:
- Demonstrable underwriting capability, with the ability to assess and make sound decisions on individual risks.
- Strong attention to detail and an inquisitive approach, with the confidence to question information that does not appear correct or consistent.
- Ability to recognise when a risk requires escalation and clearly articulate the rationale for a decision.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with customers, colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Working understanding of the regulatory principles governing general insurance, including Consumer Duty, fair value and CIDRA.
- Excellent customer service skills, with a genuine focus on achieving good customer outcomes and representing the Intelligent Insurance brand positively.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively within agreed referral and service-level requirements.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical underwriting expertise within the non-standard insurance market.
