The Lead Photonics Engineer will act as the organisation’s technical authority across the PIC development, contributing expertise across architecture, design, fabrication engagement, packaging strategy, and device characterisation. This role requires a deep understanding of photonic technologies and the practical realities of taking devices from research concepts through to manufacturable solutions. You will work closely with internal engineering teams and external partners to ensure the successful development and delivery of high-performance photonic devices, while helping shape the company’s broader photonics roadmap.
Expertise required
- Deep expertise in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies, spanning design, fabrication, packaging, and testing
- Strong knowledge of photonic design and simulation environments such as Lumerical, IPKISS, Nazca, GDSFactory, or equivalent tools
- Extensive understanding of foundry processes, PDKs, and tape-out workflows, including experience engaging with external fabrication partners
- Expertise in optical and electrical integration approaches, including packaging strategies for photonic devices
- Experience guiding device characterisation, measurement techniques, and performance validation methodologies
- Strong appreciation of the end-to-end development pathway from concept and modelling through to manufacturable photonic systems
- Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship within a collaborative, fast-moving startup environment
Background
- MSc or PhD in Photonics, Optoelectronics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline
- Significant industry or advanced research experience in integrated photonics or optical device development
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams
