This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join our UK Engineering Design team and gain considerable experience, working across a variety of challenging and interesting Highway and Infrastructure design projects. The role demands a proactive approach in a multi-disciplinary team environment and offers substantial opportunities for career progression within Haskoning.

As a member of the Integrated Transport Planning (ITP) team within Haskoning, you will work alongside skilled professionals united by a shared passion for vision-led transport planning, designing sustainable mobility solutions that meet people’s needs and help shape places that reflect the unique character of their local context.

What you will do as a Highway Engineer:

  • Our Engineering Design team focuses on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of transport systems and structures that support the movement of people and goods.
  • Our design philosophy is rooted in innovation and resilience, and our projects play a critical role in shaping how societies function and grow by ensuring efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation and infrastructure networks.
  • Our services include guiding our clients through the concept, planning and preliminary design stages to ensure their projects are feasible, sustainable, and aligned with their goals.
  • Advising on design standards, environmental concerns and managing stakeholder needs to prepare precision-engineered layouts and cost-effective solutions.
  • Taking approved concepts and developing them into construction-ready detailed designs that meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Preparing detailed drainage designs, profiles, and schedules for culverts, channels, manholes, and pipe networks ready drainage strategies, for tender and construction.
  • Providing hands-on management, rigorous oversight, and clear communication to all parties to ensure every phase of construction is executed with precision and accountability.
  • Conducting road safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and recommend improvements to reduce risk, prevent accidents, and protect every road user.

What we expect from you:

  • Experience in the production of highway and infrastructure design solutions.
  • Experience in preparing detailed designs for highway, active travel, and infrastructure projects through the relevant technical approval processes.
  • Experience with Section 278 and Section 38 highway approval submissions, together with an awareness of Section 104 and Section 106 water industry agreements.
  • A good working knowledge of the DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and other relevant design standards, with an awareness of DCG drainage design guidance and Building Regulations.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and associated design software, such as AVT and KeySign/Post.
  • The ability to contribute to client advice in line with the agreed project scope, Haskoning quality standards, and in close collaboration with colleagues.
  • A willingness to support the preparation and maintenance of technical documentation, ensuring that design decisions are clearly recorded and that schemes can be progressed by others in the future.
  • The ability to work autonomously within a team environment, delivering work to agreed timescales and budgets, and managing change requests and minor enhancements as required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly using a range of formats.
  • Membership of CIHT, ICE, or an equivalent professional body.
