The Pre-Analytics Team at Southwest Pathology Services (SPS) in Somerset is looking for a Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team of professionals, dedicated to providing a high-quality testing service and enthusiastic about mentoring and sharing knowledge. This position is primarily based at our Musgrove Park Laboratory, within our Essential Service Laboratory, in Clinical Trials. The role also supports MPH specimen reception and involves some weekend working, and early and late shift working patterns.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Working closely with laboratory scientists and research teams to support testing and providing patient-centric scientific excellence, whilst maintaining high quality standards in accordance with ISO15189.
  • Data entry and sample processing techniques.
  • Providing support in specimen reception areas of the laboratory, for specimen receipt, and data entry using LIMS systems.
  • Preparing and processing clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols.
  • Rotating through all areas of the Laboratory as required to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices.

Person specification:

  • Qualifications: A minimum requirement of 3 GCSEs to include English and Maths and at least one science subject. NVQ or equivalent.
  • Experience: Working knowledge of Biomedical techniques and practices. Experience of working in a Biomedical laboratory. Ability to communicate technical information accurately, verbally, written and electronically. Experience of Health and Safety procedures.
  • Skills & Knowledge: Good degree of accuracy, numeracy & interpretive skills. Knowledge of computer applications and LIMS including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
