The successful mentor will build a trusting relationship and support learning in ways that feel meaningful, engaging and accessible.

  • Have awareness and understanding of health needs and the impact they can have on day-to-day life, wellbeing and engagement
  • Be flexible, patient and relationship-focused
  • Have a good sense of humour
  • Be creative and able to think outside the box
  • Understand trauma-informed approaches
  • Be happy supporting learning through interests and experiences
  • Be comfortable adapting plans as needed
  • Enjoy spending time with young people and building genuine connections

Essential Requirements

  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Non-smoker
  • Comfortable around pets, particularly cats
  • Able to work collaboratively with family and professionals
  • Willing to complete a probationary period

Desirable Experience

  • Understanding of autism, ADHD and PDA
  • Awareness of physical and/or mental health conditions and their impact on daily life
  • EOTAS, alternative provision or mentoring experience
  • Community-based learning
  • Life skills support
  • Outdoor activities and nature
  • Cooking and practical skills

The Right Approach

This young person responds best to adults who:

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully
  • Allow extra processing time
  • Work collaboratively rather than hierarchically
  • Respect boundaries and choice
  • Explain the reasons behind expectations
  • Value trust, connection and autonomy

This role would not suit someone with an authoritarian or compliance-based approach.

The Right Person

We're looking for someone who can become a trusted mentor, learning companion and positive role model, helping a young person develop confidence, skills and opportunities through a personalised, relationship-based approach. If you are passionate about supporting young people to learn in ways that work for them, we'd love to hear from you.
