What We’re Looking for
This is a supervisory and organisational role requiring strong planning, communication, and problem‑solving skills. You’ll play an essential part in keeping production running smoothly by making sure the right materials are available in the right place at the right time.
What You’ll be Doing
- Plan and coordinate material requirements in line with the production programme.
- Ensure all required materials are available ahead of fabrication to avoid delays.
- Liaise with procurement/factory managers to monitor incoming deliveries and highlight shortages or risks.
- Manage material allocation across multiple projects and workstations.
- Implement and oversee regular stock checks and audits.
- Monitor stock levels and raise re‑order requirements in a timely manner.
- Minimise waste, damage, and loss of materials.
- Oversee the safe unloading, storage, and distribution of materials within the factory.
- Ensure materials are stored in designated locations in a logical and accessible manner.
- Optimise internal material flow to improve efficiency and reduce handling time.
- Ensure all materials are correctly labelled with CE markings and batch numbers.
- Maintain full traceability of materials from delivery through to fabrication.
- Ensure all documentation (delivery notes, certs, records) is accurate and properly recorded.
- Supervise and coordinate Steel Coordinators and other materials handling operatives.
- Provide clear instruction, support, and training where required.
- Monitor performance and ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
- Ensure all material handling activities are carried out safely and in line with company procedures.
- Promote a strong safety culture within the materials team.
- Ensure lifting operations, storage methods, and housekeeping meet required standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve material flow, storage systems, and stock control processes.
- Support implementation of new systems or procedures to increase efficiency.
- Work with management to develop and refine the factory’s material management strategy.
Skills & Experience
- Experience in a materials control, stores, or logistics role within steel (or similar) fabrication/manufacturing.
- Experience managing stock control systems and material traceability.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- Effective communication with leadership ability.
- Strong commitment to health and safety.
- An understanding of steel sections, components, and knowledge of relatable fabrication processes.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience.
- IT system trained in MS software and sage 200.
- Fork truck licence would be beneficial.
