Upshot: We're working with an established, innovative investment management firm in Central London looking to appoint a talented Data & AI Engineer to develop, enhance and maintain its internal technology platforms. We're looking for a Data Engineer who thinks like a Software Engineer. Someone who genuinely enjoys programming, understands system design and architecture, and takes pride in building robust, well-engineered software. This is a hands-on engineering role spanning software development, data infrastructure, automation and applied AI - rather than traditional data analytics or BI reporting.

The Opportunity for Data & AI Engineer (Python / SQL): You’ll have genuine ownership of technical projects, working across the full development lifecycle to design, build and improve systems used throughout the business.

  • Designing, developing and maintaining backend applications, APIs and data pipelines using Python and SQL.
  • Building and enhancing relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL, and integrating third-party data sources.
  • Contributing to system architecture and design, ensuring solutions are secure, reliable and maintainable.
  • Developing and improving internal applications, integrations and automated workflows.
  • Working with Azure cloud infrastructure, CI/CD and modern software development practices.
  • Developing and enhancing AI and LLM-powered tools for document processing, reporting and business automation.

What We're Looking For as Data & AI Engineer (Python / SQL):

  • Ideally 1–5 years' commercial experience in a hands-on engineering role, building and maintaining Python-based software, APIs or data pipelines.
  • Strong Python programming and SQL skills.
  • Experience developing backend services, APIs or database-driven applications.
  • A solid understanding of software engineering principles, system design and architecture.
  • Familiarity with Git, testing, debugging and deployment practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to think creatively and take ownership.
  • Above all, genuine passion for technology, intellectual curiosity and pride in producing high-quality software.
  • Experience with Azure, FastAPI, Docker, CI/CD, ETL pipelines, GitHub Actions, LLM APIs or AI-driven automation would be advantageous.
  • Financial services experience is not required.

We're far more interested in engineering fundamentals, technical aptitude and someone who loves building great software.

Why Join? This is an opportunity to work in an entrepreneurial environment where your contribution will make a tangible impact. You’ll enjoy broad technical exposure, meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to influence how systems are designed and developed, rather than working on a narrow component of a much larger platform. Our client values initiative, creativity and engineers who are genuinely enthusiastic about their craft.

Working arrangement: Hybrid – 4 days per week in the Central London office. If you're a passionate engineer who enjoys building software, solving complex problems and working with modern data and AI technologies, we'd love to hear from you.
