We’re supporting a long‑established engineering manufacturer near Cambridge that is building the next generation of advanced industrial printing systems used worldwide. They’re expanding their engineering team and are now looking for an Electrical Design Engineer with solid, practical experience who can take ownership of electrical systems from concept through to build. This is not an electronics/PCB design role; it’s hands‑on, practical electrical engineering: wiring, power distribution, control panels, motor drives, safety circuits, and integrating real industrial hardware. If you enjoy designing systems that actually get built, tested, and used in industry, this is the role for you. The company’s long‑standing Electrical Engineer has recently retired, and although other engineers are helping, they need a dedicated specialist. You’ll be the go‑to person for electrical design, supported by a highly experienced multidisciplinary team. This company values experience and practical judgement over academic prestige. They want someone who has “been around the block” enough to know what works, what doesn’t, and when to push back on unsafe or incorrect suggestions.
Responsibilities
- Design electrical systems for industrial machinery, including power distribution, control panels, safety circuits, sensors, and motor drives.
- Produce schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs using CAD tools.
- Select components and support the build of first‑off systems with production and service teams.
- Integrate your designs with mechanical and software engineering, ensuring safe, compliant, reliable operation.
- Test, troubleshoot, and validate electrical assemblies, including mains wiring and emergency stop circuits.
- Maintain documentation, support production during assembly, and contribute to the continuous improvement of existing designs.
- Occasionally visit customer sites when required.
Requirements
- 5+ years in electrical design engineering (industrial, machinery, automation, or similar).
- Strong practical understanding of wiring, power systems, safety circuits, and control panels.
- Ability to read and produce electrical schematics.
- Experience with industrial components: sensors, actuators, drives, PLCs (programming not essential).
- Confident decision‑maker who can explain why something must be done a certain way.
- Organised, methodical, and able to manage multiple projects.
This is a stable, growing engineering business with a global footprint, and a friendly culture. If you’re an experienced Electrical Design Engineer who enjoys practical, real‑world engineering and wants to join a company where your work directly shapes advanced industrial technology, we’d love to hear from you. Send your CV or get in touch for a confidential chat.
