EMBL-EBI is Europe's leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry. An important part of this service is its highly regarded training programme, which offers on-site, off-site and online training to life scientists worldwide and contributes significantly to EMBL’s overall course and conference offering.
Training is a core part of EMBL-EBI’s mission, and the success of the training programme depends on the post-holder being able to work effectively with others throughout and beyond EMBL-EBI, supporting them to deliver excellent training and to feed back the needs of users to developers. Reporting to the Head of Training, and supported by a team of scientific, technical and administrative staff, the post-holder will be operationally responsible for the training programme.
The post-holder will deliver a training programme that is scientifically balanced and engaging, reflects the full spectrum of services offered by EMBL-EBI, and evolves in parallel with users’ needs. They will ensure that courses are organised and delivered to the highest possible standard and that opportunities to enhance the programme through strategic collaboration with others, throughout EMBL and beyond, are embraced.
To fulfil this role effectively, the post-holder will be expected to familiarise themselves with EMBL-EBI’s major resources and tools, keep up to date with current trends in the molecular life sciences, and understand how life scientists use bioinformatics resources and tools to solve research problems. They will also be expected to keep up with the latest learning methodologies and their application to professional development.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in molecular life sciences and some postdoctoral experience. They will have at least two years’ experience in designing and running courses for molecular life scientists. They will have a thorough understanding of the principles behind adult learning and will be capable of coaching others to deliver high quality training. An effective project manager with previous supervisory or line management experience, they will ideally have applied successfully for grants. They will have worked in an international environment, either within academia or in a commercial setting.
In addition to being self-motivated and able to work under their own initiative, the ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills and will be a good team player who is used to working effectively to tight deadlines. They will have a strong service ethic and a professional attitude to internal and external clients. Willingness to travel internationally is essential.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
