Galapagos is a mid-sized, clinical stage biotechnology company active in the discovery and development of small molecule therapies, many of which are based on proprietary disease-modifying drug targets in disease areas for which there is a need for safe and effective medicines. Galapagos funds its research through alliance payments from its pharma partners, cash generated by its profitable service operations, licensing agreements, and its cash reserves.

There is an opening for a crystallographer at the Argenta site in Canterbury to expand the Structural Biology department. The role is ideally suited to a self-motivated and talented crystallographer, preferably with structure-based drug design experience.

In this laboratory-based role, the main responsibility will be to solve structures of therapeutic targets complexed with ligands. With a passion for applying scientific expertise to drug discovery collaborations, and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the post requires excellent laboratory skills, communication, organisational and time management skills, plus an ability to work independently. You will also need to possess the flexibility required to work in a dynamic, goal-oriented environment.

This is an opportunity to be part of an experienced team at the forefront of drug discovery, combining experimental laboratory-based sciences with computational chemistry, in vitro and in vivo DMPK and pharmacology, in a pioneering commercial setting. Argenta’s contract drug discovery scientific environment means that you will be a member of multidisciplinary teams that interact with a variety of drug discovery organisations, including biotechs and large pharma, on a diverse range of programs.

The working environment not only provides the ideal opportunity to showcase your expertise in contributing to the discovery of potential new medicines but also gives you the chance to develop your own skills via interaction with scientists from diverse cultural and scientific backgrounds. Argenta’s clients are based in a variety of international locations, including Europe and the US.

Qualified to degree or PhD level, with a strong background in protein production, crystallisation and crystallography and preferably industrial experience. Other requirements are integrity and excellent interpersonal skills. You must have the right to work for any company in the UK.
