The role
IIGCC is undergoing a huge period of growth, having quadrupled in size over the past few years and looking to expand further. Following this, IIGCC is now looking for an inaugural Chief Operating Officer (COO) who can support in the next stage of development, to ensure IIGCC has the operational infrastructure in place to support during this exciting time of rapid growth.
The COO will play a key role in overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the organisation. This person will be responsible for ensuring operational excellence across key functional areas, including Human Resources, Finance, Fundraising and Business Development, Governance and Compliance, IT and Office administration. The individual will be a strategic leader with a strong background across these different functions and a proven track record in managing a growing team.
This person will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, and be a crucial part of the Senior Management Team, helping to support the delivery of the strategy for the entire organisation. They will be responsible for reporting to the Board and communicating with a range of key stakeholders within the organisation.
Main responsibilities
Operational leadership
- Ensure operational processes align with the organisation’s mission and goals
- Oversee daily operations, ensuring that all areas and processes, including administrative, are functioning effectively and efficiently
- Ensure effective processes are in place to support strategic and annual planning
Human Resources
- Oversee the HR function, ensuring that the organisation attracts, engages, motivates, develops and retains talented staff
Finance
- Working closely with the Finance team, oversee the financial operations of the organisation to ensure the financial sustainability through appropriate financial planning, management, and reporting, as well as compliance with regulations
Fundraising and development
- Oversee the development (grant income) and fundraising function
- Oversee all grant agreements
Business development
- Scope, develop and operationalise new income streams
- Working closely with the investor (member) relations team, oversee membership income growth
Governance and compliance
- Ensure that the organisation meets its statutory obligations, maintains good governance practices and manages risks effectively
Facilities, IT and administration
- Oversee the London office facilities and potential development and implementation of any operational strategies for a presence in the EU
- Working closely with the relevant team, ensure that the organisation’s technology infrastructure supports its operational needs
Team leadership
- Bring together people across the different functions in the operations team to ensure team effectiveness, engagement and cohesion
- Line manage direct reports, including their recruitment, performance management, coaching and development.
Some travel, including internationally, will be necessary as well as some out-of-hours calls.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Extensive experience as a COO or in a related role, with expertise across various corporate functions
- Proven track record of developing and implementing operational strategies that align with organisational goals and values
- Understanding of the role of fundraising in the not for profit context
- Exceptional organisational skills
- Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and manage cross-functional teams
- Ability to work effectively across diverse stakeholders, including employees, board members, funders and partners
- Ability to think strategically and adapt to changing business environments
- A passion for building and growing an organisation
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Fluency in English
- Willingness to travel occasionally, including internationally
