As an Associate Director, you will be responsible for the consistent and timely delivery of complex design projects as well as leading specific business aspects defined by the business plan. Your responsibilities extend beyond projects. You will actively participate in strategic decision making aimed at driving the business forward and you will support the directors by leading the delivery of company-wide initiatives, delegating as appropriate.

You will demonstrate visible strong leadership skills and be able to foster good relationships whilst being accountable for the performance, development and progression of the team. Your specific and significant experience will be used to develop and maintain long-term client relationships through trust and transparency. You will develop new business through these relationships, seeking out networking possibilities to attract and retain a significant and prosperous client base as well as supporting other team members in developing these skills.

You will be a strategic and analytical thinker who takes time to consider various options with the aim of arriving at the best solutions, in collaboration with others; focusing beyond the execution of solutions by making objective judgements and recommendations considering wider implications beyond the immediate task. You will help the team develop efficiencies in the way we deliver work as well as staying at the forefront of the industry technically.

You will be responsible for your own professional development as well as that of others. This will be through training programmes, mentorship opportunities, and initiatives aimed at furthering your career development and supporting others in theirs. Taking the lead on career development plans, you should be a role model for others, fostering a collaborative environment for everyone to develop. You will disseminate knowledge throughout the team and bring extensive and varied experience to the role. You will be supportive of others' career development, assisting them in meeting their objectives, holding reviews and providing feedback to support their development. You should also be able to articulate the decision-making process so that others can understand the rationale and consider this in their development moving forward.

You will ensure the QA process for all technical deliverables is followed on the projects you are overseeing, and you will chair design reviews within the team. You will also be responsible for the approval of key deliverables. Associate Directors maintain responsibility for their projects while collaborating with other senior colleagues to enhance technical skills and capabilities across the entire team.

Beyond individual project responsibilities, your commercial mindset backed by deep financial, economic and market knowledge should enable you to consider future trends and opportunities. You will be an articulate communicator and active listener, always maintaining self-awareness and openness. You will maintain the capacity to construct and deliver presentations that build credibility and represent DFC, including representing DFC in specialist areas.

Suitability:

  • To thrive in this role, you should hold at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) field, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to converse and communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences with precision and clarity.
  • Recognise the value of office presence in fostering a collaborative environment for team growth.
  • Bring a wealth of experience, with a background in an engineering consulting role, preferably within a fire engineering environment. You will be responsible for supporting other engineers on their career path.
  • Possess advanced knowledge of the UK construction industry, market trends, an understanding of different project procurement processes, strong commercial awareness and business development skills and have a track record of developing teams and engineers.
  • Hold Chartered Engineer status through the Engineering Council with a relevant UK institution or possess an equivalent international qualification.
  • Exhibit substantial experience in effectively managing the time, deliverables and training of others in a fire engineering capacity.
  • Exhibit an ability to oversee a significant number of projects simultaneously, both as a project leader and in a support capacity, actively participating in all aspects of the project management process and have a track record of successful delivery.
  • Be aware of new methods and developments in the industry and keep up with market trends, consider how they affect DFC and identify new practices or changes required for DFC to adapt.
  • Identify a specific area of technical expertise and lead the company's initiatives in this specialised field, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrate outstanding leadership, mentorship, and role model attributes that inspire and guide team members towards success, actively encouraging and supporting others in their development.
  • Have a desire to take responsibility and accountability for business wide initiatives aimed at technical, commercial and process improvements.
