Who we are looking for:

IChemE is looking to engage an experienced customer insight and personalisation specialist to help us develop evidence-based professional identities that improve our understanding of the members, employers and wider audiences we serve. Experience of working with membership organisations is desirable.

Using IChemE's existing research, data and member insight, together with relevant external research and market intelligence where appropriate, you will develop a suite of member, employer and non-member professional identities. You will also create a practical toolkit that enables colleagues across IChemE globally to deliver more relevant, personalised and effective engagement and experiences.

The ultimate goal is to improve our member experience, strengthen engagement and support long-term retention across our global community of more than 32,000 members.

The assignment:

This project will be delivered in three phases:

1. Member professional identity – understanding the needs, motivations, behaviours and engagement drivers of existing members.

2. Employer professional identity – understanding the organisations that employ, support and develop chemical engineering professionals.

3. Non-member professional identity – understanding prospective members and other audiences with the potential to engage with IChemE.

Working with colleagues across IChemE and drawing on existing research, data and insights, you will:

  • Develop an evidence-based professional identity framework covering members, employers and non-members.
  • Identify the key needs, motivations, behaviours and engagement drivers of different audiences.
  • Create a practical and accessible suite of professional identities that can be used consistently across IChemE.
  • Translate insight into recommendations that support more effective targeting, personalisation and engagement.
  • Validate and refine the professional identities with stakeholders to ensure they are credible, relevant and useful.
  • Provide guidance and support to embed the professional identities into planning, decision-making and service delivery.

What success looks like:

Success is more than creation of the professional identities alone. We want them to become a practical tool that helps colleagues make better decisions and deliver a better experience for our target audiences.

By the end of the assignment, IChemE will have:

  • A shared understanding of the needs, motivations and behaviours of key audiences.
  • Practical tools that colleagues can confidently use in their day-to-day work.
  • Greater consistency in applying audience insight across communications, products, services and experiences.
  • More relevant and personalised engagement for members, employers and prospective members.
  • A clear approach for embedding and maintaining professional identities across the business.
  • A stronger foundation for improving member experience, increasing engagement and supporting retention and membership growth.

About you

You will be an experienced marketing, customer insight, membership or personalisation specialist with a proven track record of turning audience insight into practical tools that drive organisational change.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience of developing evidence-based professional identities, audience segmentation or customer insight frameworks.
  • The ability to translate complex research and data into clear, engaging and actionable outputs.
  • Experience of successfully embedding professional identities or customer insight into organisational ways of working.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills, with the ability to build understanding, enthusiasm and adoption across different teams.
  • An understanding of how personalisation can improve experience, engagement, loyalty and retention.
  • A strong focus on outcomes, particularly how improved member experience and engagement can support retention and members choosing to stay with IChemE.

Proposed Timescales

We anticipate this assignment will be delivered over 3-6 months through three stage-gated phases, with progression to each phase subject to review and approval of the previous phase's outputs.

  • Phase 1 - Members: develop professional identities for existing members, including their needs, motivations, behaviours and engagement drivers.
  • Phase 2 – Employers: subject to Phase 1 approval, develop professional identities for organisations that employ, support and develop chemical engineering professionals.
  • Phase 3 - Non-Members: subject to Phase 2 approval, develop professional identities for prospective members and other target audiences with the potential to engage with IChemE.

Final Deliverables

  • An integrated Professional Identity Framework and supporting materials covering members, employers and non-members.
  • Recommendations for targeting, personalisation and engagement.
  • Guidance and training to support adoption across IChemE’s global teams.
