We\’re seeking an experienced SQL Developer to design, develop, and support database solutions integrated within PLC/SCADA-based control systems. You\’ll play a vital role in delivering secure, high-performance data infrastructure for complex automation environments-particularly in regulated industries such as nuclear, MOD, or pharmaceutical.

You will work closely with control system engineers and project teams to develop efficient, reliable databases, ensure data integrity and security, and support the full system lifecycle from design to commissioning.

  • Design, develop, implement, and test databases using Microsoft SQL Server (or equivalent), integrated with automation/control systems.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation, including:
  • Requirements documents (URS, RTM)
  • Functional/System Design Specs (FDS, SDD)
  • Software and Test Specifications (SSS, FAT, SAT)
  • Operation & Maintenance Manuals
  • Optimise database performance through indexing, tuning, and query optimisation.
  • Support server deployment (including VMWare and OS setup) and database infrastructure in large-scale networked environments.
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop and test integrated control systems; produce network architecture diagrams and interface documentation.
  • Participate in formal testing and validation (including change management), supporting in-house and on-site acceptance testing as needed.
  • Required Skills & Experience

    • Significant experience developing and implementing SQL Server or similar databases in PLC/SCADA environments.
    • Strong programming/scripting skills (e.g., SQL, Python).
    • Experience with data modelling, entity relationship diagrams, and formal design/test documentation.
    • Solid understanding of database performance tuning, indexing, data migration, and security best practices.
    • Experience in server deployment, including virtual environments (e.g., VMware).

    Desirable Experience

    • Industry experience in nuclear, defence (MOD), pharmaceutical, or similarly regulated sectors.
    • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP).
    • Knowledge of OT Cybersecurity and secure design principles.
    • Experience with database clustering, load balancing, and redundancy.

    Qualifications

    Essential:

    • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline; or equivalent industry experience with a focus on EC&I and database systems.
