Based in the heart of the Lake District, we help individuals build confidence, achieve personal goals, and experience the thrill of the outdoors in a truly inclusive environment.
We are currently looking to expand our pool of Freelance Activity Instructorsto join our team and support us to deliver exciting and accessible outdoor activities that challenge, inspire, and transform lives.
About the role
As a Freelance Activities Instructor, you will deliver a wide range of outdoor adventure activities for people with disabilities. The nature of our work at Calvert Trust, requires our instructors to be proactive and client focused, delivering fun, safe and inspiring activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Instructing in the Centre\'s main activities such as sailing, canoeing, rock-climbing and hill walking, as well as several other activities, for example, archery, orienteering, environmental appreciation etc.
- Communicating with groups on a day-to-day basis to ensure that their aims and objectives are being met, consider the needs of the group members, and work closely with care workers and/or family members.
- Complying with Centre standards, operating procedures and Health and Safety regulations.
- Help ensure a safe, fun, and empowering experience for all guests.
What we’re looking for
As a freelance instructor, it is essential to be highly skilled and experienced, with a strong and up-to-date knowledge of outdoor education. This includes staying current with best practices in line with relevant National Governing Bodies (NGBs).
A successful instructor is naturally personable, with a deep understanding of varied communication styles. It\'s important to take a genuine interest in the individuals within a group, creating a supportive environment where people feel seen and heard.
You should be comfortable interacting with ease and empathy, especially with participants who may face challenges in expressing their emotions or physical abilities. The role requires patience, adaptability, and a people-first mindset - ensuring every individual feels empowered and included throughout their journey.
- Driving Licence
You should have several of the following essential NGB’s or higher qualification.
- CWI
- Hill and Moorland Leader
- Paddle Sport Instructor
- Dingley Instructor
- First Aid
- Knowledge of local areas and venues, particularly those which are accessible
- D1 Licence
- Experience with working with people with disabilities.

All positions are subject to an enhanced DBS check and references.
