The Computing and Information Services (CIS) has an annual operational budget in the order of £10m, with approximately 140 staff based at the Durham University campus. CIS provides academic, teaching, and administrative services that underpin the day-to-day activities of the whole organisation.
As a Trainee IT Technician, you will assist with activities to maintain the day-to-day operation and ongoing development of Computing and Information Services (CIS). You will maintain a high level of IT services throughout the University, assisting students, staff, and visitors in their use of Durham University IT systems.
This is an incredible opportunity for someone who is passionate about technology. You will undertake activities relating to but not limited to:
- Operating Systems: Work with various operating systems, including Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, and Mac OS.
- Desktop Software: Handle desktop software applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and specialist academic software.
- Specialist AV Equipment: Involved in setting up and maintaining specialist audiovisual (AV) equipment, including video conferencing and streaming systems.
- Multi-Function Devices and Desktop Printers: Support multi-function devices and desktop printers.
- Remote Administration and Software Distribution Tools: Use tools for remote administration and software distribution.
- Network Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot network issues.
- Mobile and Tablet Support: Assist with mobile devices and provide technical support.
- Accessibility Configuration: Configure hardware, software, and devices to support accessibility needs.
- IT Applications for Disabilities: Work with IT applications and technology to support staff and students with disabilities.
Eligibility for Apprenticeship Position: To be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship position, you must not have obtained a higher education qualification at Level 4 or above.
Working Hours: The first year of the apprenticeship will be working on the IT Service Desk, with hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday to Friday. A flexible approach to work will be necessary.
Annual Leave Restriction: There is a 2-week annual leave restriction during the start of the academic year to support staff and students.
