Inspired is a market leading, technology-enabled provider of energy and sustainability solutions in the UK - supporting businesses to transition to net zero carbon and manage their response to climate change. Established in 2000, we became the first publicly quoted advisor following a successful AIM debut in 2011. We are now the UK’s number one destination for businesses seeking expert insight and advisory services to help them manage their energy costs, reduce their carbon emissions and prove their net zero carbon and ESG strategies to their investors and customers.
We are looking for a Battery Design Manager to join our successful Optimisation team. This role is home based with occasional travel to offices required.
Role and Responsibilities
The BESS Design Manager will be responsible for leading the technical assessment, design coordination, commercial optimisation and delivery readiness of behind-the-meter Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the Behind the Meter portfolio. The role will ensure battery storage solutions are technically robust, commercially viable, compliant with all relevant regulations, and seamlessly integrated with solar PV, EV charging, building loads and private wire / on-site PPA structures. This individual will act as the internal subject matter expert for commercial and industrial BESS systems, supporting origination, design, construction and operations teams from early-stage feasibility through to energisation and operational handover.
The successful candidate's responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Technical Design and Feasibility: Lead technical feasibility assessments for behind-the-meter BESS opportunities across retail, logistics, industrial and commercial sites. Analyse half-hourly interval meter data, demand profiles and tariff structures to identify optimal battery opportunities. Size battery systems (kW / kWh / MW / MWh) aligned to commercial objectives including peak shaving, tariff optimisation, solar self-consumption and resilience. Produce concept designs including SLDs, equipment layouts, connection architecture and integration strategy. Coordinate BESS integration with solar PV, EV charging, generators and site infrastructure. Review fire safety strategy, ventilation, access, spatial constraints and planning considerations.
- Commercial and Financial Optimisation: Develop battery business cases using tariff arbitrage, demand charge reduction, DUoS / TNUoS savings and operational flexibility revenues. Model project IRR, NPV, payback and investor returns to support ISEPA funding structures. Work with commercial teams to optimise PPA pricing using BESS-enabled value stacks. Support portfolio prioritisation by ranking sites based on technical suitability and financial return. Maintain awareness of UK battery pricing trends, OEM warranties and route-to-market opportunities.
- Delivery and Construction Support: Work closely with Tim Hughes and the Construction Design team to ensure projects are buildable, safe and efficiently deployable. Manage technical inputs through design freeze, procurement, installation and commissioning stages. Review contractor designs, RAMS, commissioning plans and handover documentation. Provide technical support to site delivery teams during installation and energisation. Ensure all works meet DNO, G99, BS7671, fire code and relevant statutory requirements. Coordinate OEMs, EPCs, controls providers and specialist subcontractors.
- Operational Performance & Asset Management: Support commissioning acceptance testing and operational readiness. Define battery control strategies with EMS providers for tariff optimisation and site objectives. Monitor post-install performance and recommend optimisation improvements. Support O&M teams with technical fault resolution and lifecycle planning. Review degradation, cycling performance and warranty compliance.
- Governance and Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, electrical standards and H&S obligations. Maintain robust technical governance for battery technology selection and design approvals. Support development of internal design standards, specification templates and supplier frameworks. Contribute to continuous improvement of battery deployment processes.
