The Financial Controller is a senior, controls-focused role sitting at the heart of the divisional finance function. Reporting to the Divisional Finance Director, you will own financial controlling for the Group's Technology business - delivering a clean, timely month-end close and a well-controlled balance sheet. You will also oversee a global, functional P&L and have significant interaction with the Group Finance Team (also located in Birmingham). You will coordinate the locally required statutory, tax and VAT work through a Netherlands finance lead and an external Dutch accountancy firm. This is a controls-first role but will also require supporting ad-hoc work initiatives, as well as some FP&A activities as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Control & Month-End Close
- Own the month-end close and reporting timetable for both Dutch entities in Sage Intacct, including journals, accruals, prepayments and reconciliations.
- Be a key point of contact to the Group team regarding Prophix (FP&A tool) upload and reconciliation.
- Maintain balance-sheet integrity through timely reconciliations, review, provisioning and a robust controls framework.
- Prepare consolidation inputs and manage group-GAAP / IFRS alignment and intercompany balances.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable with a focus on cash balances.
- Work collaboratively with the Birmingham Shared Services team, ensuring appropriate controls are in place over all transactions.
Statutory, Tax & Compliance
- Coordinate the externally-prepared Dutch statutory accounts (Dutch GAAP) and KvK (Dutch Chamber of Commerce) filing with the external accountancy firm.
- Coordinate corporation tax (Vpb) and support transfer-pricing requirements with the external firm.
- Own the statutory audit relationship and review locally-prepared VAT (BTW) and ICP (intra community transactions) submissions.
- Ensure the statutory calendar is met in full, supporting the Netherlands finance lead.
Reporting, Planning & Analysis
- Lead the production of month and year-end results for both Dutch entities, including management analysis highlighting variances, trends and impacts on the annual business plan and quarterly forecasts.
- Prepare the budget, forecast, monthly variance analysis and management commentary, and produce board and management reporting packs.
- Develop financial models and analysis to guide planning and decision-making, defining KPIs and dashboards that support data-driven decisions.
- Partner with local Sales and operations, providing guidance to both finance and non-finance staff to enhance financial acumen across the business.
Team Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Line-manage accounting teams in the Netherlands and UK, providing day-to-day guidance, development support and performance oversight.
- Provide guidance on the use of financial systems, ensuring the integrity of the data held within them.
- Champion the adoption of new financial processes and systems that enhance efficiency, accuracy and insight, acting as a change agent and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Drive close automation and support the transition of transactional processing into the Shared Services Centre.
- Other ad-hoc tasks and reporting as required in line with the remit of the role.
Fully qualified accountant (ACA/ ACCA/ CIMA) with significant post-qualification experience in a financial control or similar role.
Proven financial controller experience, ideally across multiple or international entities.
Strong technical grounding in month-end close, balance-sheet control, consolidation and foreign-entity reporting.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable business insights.
Exceptional relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to establish trust and credibility across all levels of an organisation.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
Proficiency in financial systems and tools, with a preference for candidates with experience in Sage Intacct or similar platforms, including close automation and controls.
Strong MS Excel skills.
Desirable (but not essential):
- SaaS / subscription based / recurring-revenue (ARR) experience, awareness of Dutch GAAP and Dutch tax/ VAT (not essential), and experience of shared-services or finance centralisation.
