A long-established, family-owned independent practice in Sydenham is looking to recruit a patient-focused Optometrist to join their team on a 4–5 day per week basis. This opportunity has arisen as the practice moves away from relying on locums and returns to what independent practice does best — building long-term relationships with patients and delivering consistent, high-quality care. If you value clinical freedom, continuity of care, and being part of a close-knit team, this is well worth considering.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Independent, family-owned practice
  • 40-minute adult testing times
  • Focus on quality care rather than volume
  • Clinical freedom with a traditional refraction style
  • Stable, supportive working environment
  • Opportunity to build long-term patient relationships
  • Genuine team-focused culture

The Practice

  • Well-established independent with a loyal patient base and a strong reputation within the local community
  • 2 testing rooms (Second room also used for audiology and contact lenses when required)
  • High street location
  • 3 on-site parking spaces
  • Excellent public transport links
  • 40-minute adult test times
  • 30-minute children's tests
  • No pre-screening — full control of the patient journey
  • Trial frame refraction (no phoropter)
  • OCT, visual fields, slit lamp
  • Manual focimeter
  • Eyecare tonometry carried out in-room

This is very much a quality-led environment, suited to clinicians who prefer time with patients rather than rushing through appointments.

The Role

You will play a key role in maintaining high clinical standards and supporting the long-term success of the practice. Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering comprehensive eye examinations
  • Providing contact lens services
  • Managing the full patient journey in-room
  • Working closely with the dispensing team
  • Supporting strong patient satisfaction
  • Contributing to appropriate clinical-to-dispensing conversion

Who This Would Suit

Applications are welcomed from both newly qualified and experienced Optometrists. The ideal candidate will be:

  • Clinically confident and patient-focused
  • Comfortable managing full testing independently
  • Commercially aware, without being sales-driven
  • Keen to work in a true independent environment
  • Looking for stability rather than ongoing locum work
  • Someone who values autonomy and professional judgement

This role will particularly appeal to Optometrists who prefer a traditional independent setting over a high-volume corporate environment.

Salary & Benefits

  • Up to £62,000 depending on experience
  • 28 days holiday including Bank Holidays
  • Additional time off at Christmas
  • Easter Saturday off
  • Your birthday off
  • GOC and ABDO fees paid
  • Indemnity insurance covered
  • CET courses provided
  • Support and sponsorship for further qualifications

Working Pattern

  • 4–5 days per week
  • Flexible working days considered
  • Stable, consistent clinic structure
