We are recruiting a part-time Peer Review Editor for a prestigious and historic scientific society based in London. You will be part of the editorial and production team, managing peer review on two flagship biological science journals and ensuring seamless manuscript progression. This part-time role is 3 days per week (Monday – Wednesday), with one day in the office (ideally Wednesday) and the other two days remote. The full-time equivalent salary is £38,000, pro-rata to £22,800 for 3 days.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Peer Review Process: Manage incoming submissions, assign manuscripts to Editors, actively recruit peer reviewers, and communicate editorial decisions to authors.
  • Maintain Workflow Efficiency: Ensure manuscripts progress smoothly through peer review stages and meet established KPIs.
  • Uphold Research Integrity: Forward any flagged manuscripts to the Research Integrity Specialist for thorough assessment.
  • Facilitate Production Handoff: Confirm accepted manuscripts are correctly formatted and include all necessary information before transfer to Production.
  • Identify Editorial Board Needs: Inform the Publishing Manager of any identified gaps within the Editorial Boards.
  • Journal Representation: Act as an ambassador for the journals at conferences, seminars, and academic institutions across the UK, mainland Europe, USA, and other strategic locations, ensuring activities yield tangible results.
  • Marketing Collaboration: Work closely with Marketing staff on selected promotional initiatives.
  • Special Projects: Engage in various project work as required.

About You

You will need a strong scientific publishing background with direct peer review experience, ideally with ScholarOne or similar. We are looking for an outstanding communicator, adept at managing difficult conversations and author expectations. A science background, particularly in biology, is highly advantageous, along with experience dealing with academics.
