ROLE SUMMARY:
Wetherby Preparatory School is an independent boys’ preparatory school (ages 7 – 13) of 350 boys set in the dynamic area of Marylebone in London. Wetherby prepares its pupils for many of the top day and boarding senior schools in the country and therefore works at a level significantly above National Curriculum expectations.
Wetherby Prep seeks an enthusiastic and committed English Teacher to teach pupils in Years 5–8 from January 2026. The successful candidate will deliver a rich, skills-based curriculum that fosters a love of reading, writing, and spoken English. In addition, they will play a key pastoral role as Form Tutor to a Year 8 class, supporting pupils in their final year at Prep before senior school.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach English across Years 5–8, ensuring engaging lessons that stretch and support all pupils.
- Plan and deliver lessons that foster progress in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Use assessment effectively to track progress, inform teaching, and prepare pupils for exams and senior school entrance/scholarship.
- Promote a love of literature through the use of varied and challenging texts.
- Encourage creative writing, debating, and performance opportunities to enhance learning.
- Work collaboratively within the English department to develop schemes of work and resources.
- Contribute to enrichment activities such as creative writing clubs, debating competitions, theatre trips, or author visits.
- Serve as the main point of contact for pupils and parents in a Year 8 form group.
- Monitor academic progress, behaviour, and wellbeing of pupils in the form.
- Lead daily form times, deliver tutor programme activities, and prepare pupils for transition to senior school.
- Promote responsibility, independence, and leadership within the Year 8 cohort.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- A passion for teaching English and inspiring young learners.
- Strong subject knowledge across KS2 and KS3 English.
- Ability to stretch high achievers while supporting pupils who need consolidation.
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills.
- Commitment to pastoral care and ability to foster strong tutor-pupil-parent relationships.
- Enthusiasm for working in a busy prep school environment.
- Experience of preparing pupils for senior school entrance, ISEB Pre-Tests or scholarship exams.
- Experience of running clubs, trips, or enrichment opportunities.
- Experience of teaching in a similarly aspirational setting.
