About the School

We are delighted to be supporting a well‑established specialist SEN provision in the Colchester area, run by a respected charity with a long‑standing commitment to supporting children with autism and complex needs. The school provides education for young people aged 3 - 19 with autism, communication differences, and a range of associated needs. This nurturing, autism‑focused environment is built on understanding each child as an individual. The team works tirelessly to help pupils grow in confidence, independence, emotional regulation, and self‑esteem.

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated SEN Teacher (KS2) to teach a class of pupils with autism who have a range of communication and behavioural needs. You will be supported by an experienced multi‑disciplinary team who share your passion for creating inspiring, personalised learning experiences. This is a fixed‑term contract until July, with the potential to become a permanent role depending on school needs and performance. Working within this specialist setting, you will deliver a strengths‑based curriculum that celebrates progress in many forms; not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and developmentally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, individualised lessons for pupils with autism and complex learning profiles.
  • Assess progress regularly and adapt teaching strategies to meet each child’s unique needs.
  • Use autism‑specific approaches and trauma‑informed behaviour strategies to support positive outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain thorough records, contribute to reviews, and participate in team meetings.
  • Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that supports communication, emotional regulation, and wellbeing.

What We’re Looking For

  • QTS (or very strong SEN experience - teaching qualifications outside mainstream will also be considered).
  • Experience supporting pupils with autism, communication differences, and behavioural challenges.
  • Knowledge of autism‑specific pedagogy and an enthusiasm for creative, child‑centred teaching.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Resilience, warmth, and a genuine commitment to supporting children with complex needs.
  • An Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one).

Safeguarding & Equal Opportunities

Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people is our highest priority. All applicants will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS check and supply two professional references. We are committed to equality, diversity, and creating an inclusive environment where all pupils and staff feel respected, valued, and supported.
