About the Role:
Here at Insmed Cambridge we are building a cutting-edge wet-lab and computational platform to develop therapies for rare genetic diseases. We are looking for an exceptional Platform Engineer who combines strong full-stack software development skills with solid DevOps and cloud infrastructure capabilities. As part of the Informatics and Data Science team, you will both build the bioinformatic web-ecosystem that empowers our scientists and help build, automate and maintain the cloud infrastructure that our platform runs on. You will work in close collaboration with platform developers, DevOps, bioinformaticians, human geneticists, machine learning/data science specialists, wet lab scientists, as well as our central cloud, security and IT teams.
What You'll Do:
- Platform Development: Be a key contributor in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team to help shape the future of data exploration and interpretation at Insmed. Contribute to the design and implementation of a flexible bioinformatic web-ecosystem empowering our wet-lab scientists and data scientists to get more out of their data. Engineer, optimise and validate internal pipelines to be flexible, scalable and configurable while maintaining production-quality standards. Promote data integrity and responsibility by employing best practices for data handling and storage, enabling broad-scale analyses. Liaise with stakeholders and external collaborators.
- DevOps & Infrastructure: Develop, deploy, and maintain our cloud-based applications and services empowering our science teams. Develop and deploy applications and data workflows on the organisation's cloud platform. Build and deploy containerised workloads onto the organisation's managed Kubernetes platform. Manage CI/CD pipelines, builds and Docker images (GitHub + GCP). Script and automate common cloud and deployment tasks. Support machine learning model deployment, training and inference.
Who You Are:
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, biology, machine learning, statistics or a related field.
- Full-stack development experience, with strong coding skills in Python.
- Experience in life-sciences applications, workflows, and systems in the fields of drug development, cheminformatics, or bioinformatics.
- Strong JavaScript development skills – preferably Svelte.
- Experience designing, maintaining, and interfacing with SQL databases – preferably PostgreSQL.
- Experience with cloud environments (especially GCP).
- Experience with Docker and container-based workflows.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).
- Experience with version control using git, with familiarity of different branching and merging strategies.
- Experience coding within a team.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with our computational, IT, and laboratory science teams.
Desirable but not essential:
- Experience with Kubernetes cluster setup, deployment and management.
- Experience deploying machine learning models and optimising deep-learning model training on GPUs.
- Experience working with Pydantic & SQLAlchemy.
- UI/UX experience.
- Experience with Nextflow or other bioinformatics workflow languages.
- Experience with ArgoCD and Argo Workflows.
- Working knowledge of infrastructure-as-code using Terraform.
- Familiarity with event queues.
- Experience integrating external cloud services, systems, and applications.
- Experience developing tools for drug discovery.
