The Position: Senior/Principal Civil & Structural Engineer
We are seeking a Senior/Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to strengthen our growing engineering and design consultancy. This role is ideal for an experienced professional engineer who brings deep technical expertise, particularly process industries and/or the water industry, and can provide disciplined leadership across a diverse portfolio of industrial/energy/water projects.
As a senior member of the team, you will lead key technical decisions, oversee civil/structural design scopes, mentor engineers across all levels, and represent the Civil & Structural discipline in client, contractor, and vendor engagements. You will play a pivotal role in shaping best practices, improving design approaches, and elevating the technical capability of the team.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Senior/Principal Civil & Structural Engineer will include:
- Lead the delivery, technical review and assurance of civil and structural engineering outputs, including calculations, specifications, reports, drawings and design documentation, ensuring high quality and compliance with relevant standards.
- Provide senior technical leadership on civil and structural design challenges, including structural analysis, load path definition, foundation strategy and buildability considerations.
- Act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor on structural assessments, including finite element modelling, stability assessments, and the evaluation of structural robustness and resilience.
- Deliver and oversee analysis and design using industry-standard tools (such as SCIA, Robot, Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds and IDEA StatiCa, or equivalent), selecting appropriate methods and approaches to suit project requirements; familiarity with these tools listed is beneficial.
- Develop and implement project-specific design philosophies, technical standards and specifications for steel, reinforced concrete and civil infrastructure, ensuring alignment with client requirements, codes and best practice.
- Define and manage scope, deliverables and resourcing for civil and structural design packages, supporting project planning, commercial input, risk management and change control within a consultancy environment.
- Act as the primary civil and structural interface with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams, providing clear technical guidance, resolving complex queries, and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Collaborate across disciplines to deliver integrated and innovative design solutions, contributing to design reviews, constructability assessments, safety workshops and key project gateways.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and professional development for engineers, promoting a culture of excellence, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
This role offers the opportunity to lead technically challenging, high-impact projects while playing a key part in shaping and enhancing the capability of the Civil and Structural discipline. You’ll join a growing consultancy where your influence directly contributes to team development and client outcomes, with professional development, Chartership support and clear pathways into discipline leadership. Working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where technical expertise is genuinely valued, you’ll have the autonomy and scope to make a real impact.
Preferred Profile:
- Degree qualified in Civil or Structural, with Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership highly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience delivering detailed civil and structural design within sectors such as infrastructure, energy, industrial or water projects, with a strong understanding of structural systems, materials and applicable design standards.
- Proven capability in structural/civil analysis and design using industry-recognised approaches.
- Experience of structural analysis and design software (e.g. SCIA, Robot, Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, IDEA StatiCa or similar); familiarity with these tools is advantageous but not essential.
- Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards (e.g. Eurocodes, British Standards) and their application within a consultancy environment, alongside an appreciation of constructability and buildability considerations.
- Proven ability to lead design packages, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities and engage confidently with clients, contractors and key stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring and supporting the development of junior and mid-level engineers, contributing to technical excellence within the team.
- Experience in areas such as foundation design, temporary works, or specialist structural assessments is advantageous.
- Previous consultancy experience, with a client-facing and advisory approach, is highly desirable.
