We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to strengthen our growing engineering and design consultancy. This role is ideal for an experienced electrical professional who brings deep technical expertise, particularly in power systems and power system studies, and can provide disciplined leadership across a diverse portfolio of industrial and energy projects.
As a senior member of the team, you will lead key technical decisions, oversee complex electrical design scopes, mentor engineers across all levels, and represent the electrical discipline in high-impact client, contractor, and vendor engagements. You will play a pivotal role in shaping best practices, improving design approaches, and elevating the technical capability of the team.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Principal Electrical Engineer will include:
- Lead the production, review and approval of electrical engineering documents including calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, drawings and technical reports.
- Provide expert input on complex electrical design activities such as cable sizing, load assessments, network configuration, system architecture and power system design.
- Act as the technical authority for power system studies, including load flow, fault level assessments, protection coordination, arc flash analysis, harmonic studies and overall system resilience.
- Deliver and oversee power system studies using ETAP or similar tools, and lead the definition of network design requirements for LV and HV systems, protection philosophies, earthing strategies and operating concepts.
- Define scope, deliverables and resource requirements for electrical engineering work packages, providing accurate input to schedules, estimating, risk identification and change management.
- Represent the electrical discipline in client meetings and technical discussions, resolving complex design queries and coordinating with vendors and contractors to ensure technical integrity.
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated, high-quality project solutions, contributing to design reviews, HAZOPs, model reviews and key technical checkpoints.
- Mentor and develop engineers and apprentices, promoting a culture of engineering excellence, quality and continuous improvement across the team.
This role offers the opportunity to lead technically challenging, high-impact projects while playing a key part in shaping and enhancing the capability of the electrical discipline. You’ll join a growing consultancy where your influence directly contributes to team development and client outcomes, with professional development, Chartership support and clear pathways into discipline leadership. Working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where technical expertise is genuinely valued, you’ll have the autonomy and scope to make a real impact.
If you are an experienced Electrical Engineer ready to step into a Principal-level role - or already operating at Principal level and seeking greater technical influence and responsibility - we would welcome your application.
Preferred Profile:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant industry experience (HNC/HND or similar also considered), with Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) advantageous.
- Significant experience delivering detailed electrical design within industrial, energy or infrastructure sectors, with strong working knowledge of LV and HV systems (up to 11/33 kV).
- Experience performing power system studies using ETAP or similar tools, including load flow, fault level assessments, protection coordination, harmonic analysis and related assessments.
- Competent with cable sizing tools such as ElectricalOM, Amtech or similar, alongside an excellent understanding of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
- Proven ability to lead project design scopes, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities and engage confidently with clients, vendors and senior stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience guiding and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, supporting their technical development.
- Experience with ATEX/hazardous area classification, earthing and lightning protection design, or lighting design is desirable.
- Previous consultancy experience is advantageous.
