Job Description

Tax Investigations Senior Manager

Manchester | Hybrid | Β£80,000-Β£100,000 + bonus
An opportunity to join a growing specialist boutique at an exciting stage of its development.

A highly regarded boutique tax investigations firm is looking to appoint an experienced Tax Investigations Senior Manager to strengthen its Manchester team.

The firm specialises in complex tax investigations and disputes, advising individuals, businesses and high-net-worth clients across a broad range of HMRC matters.

This is a technically focused role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail of investigations and wants greater responsibility, client exposure and the opportunity to play a genuine role in a growing practice.

What you'll be doing

  • Managing a portfolio of complex and high-value HMRC investigations from opening through to settlement.
  • Leading COP8 and COP9 cases, including matters involving suspected deliberate behaviour and potential tax fraud.
  • Managing Code of Practice 9 investigations and dealing directly with HMRC's Fraud Investigation Service.
  • Advising on Worldwide Disclosure Facility (WDF) and other voluntary disclosure opportunities.
  • Handling enquiries across Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax, PAYE/NIC and offshore matters.
  • Reviewing financial information, identifying tax risks and developing investigation strategies.
  • Preparing technical submissions, disclosure reports and detailed correspondence with HMRC.
  • Leading settlement negotiations and challenging HMRC's position where appropriate.
  • Providing technical oversight and mentoring to more junior members of the team.
  • Building trusted client relationships and contributing to the continued growth of the practice.

What we're looking for

We're keen to speak with experienced Tax Investigations professionals who have:

  • Strong experience managing HMRC investigations.
  • Extensive experience dealing directly with HMRC.
  • Proven COP8 and COP9 experience.
  • Experience with WDF, voluntary disclosures and settlement negotiations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HMRC enquiry and investigation processes.
  • Experience managing complex or high-value cases.
  • Previous experience mentoring or managing junior professionals.
  • Excellent written, technical and client-facing skills.

Previous HMRC experience is highly advantageous but not essential. Candidates with strong practice-based HMRC investigations experience will also be considered.

Why this role?

This isn't an opportunity to join a huge, heavily structured practice.

You'll be joining a specialist boutique that is actively growing, where your technical expertise and experience will have a genuine impact.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Work on complex and technically interesting investigations
  • Take ownership of significant client matters
  • Work closely with senior leadership
  • Help develop the Manchester offering
  • Build your own client relationships and profile
  • Progress towards Director level and beyond
