Senior Bookkeeper - Accountancy Practice

Are you an experienced bookkeeper looking for a role where you can take ownership of a varied client portfolio and become a trusted point of contact? A well-established and growing accountancy practice is looking to appoint a Senior Bookkeeper to join its team, offering the chance to work closely with a broad range of owner-managed businesses and growing companies.
This is a client-facing position suited to someone who is confident managing bookkeeping from start to finish, enjoys working independently and wants to add more value than simply processing transactions. You'll have the opportunity to develop strong client relationships while supporting wider accounting and reporting requirements.

The Role

As a Senior Bookkeeper, you'll manage day-to-day bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients, ensuring their financial records are accurate, complete and maintained to a high standard. You'll work closely with accountants and client managers, providing reliable financial information that supports VAT returns, management accounts and year-end accounts.
The role would suit someone who already has solid practice experience and is comfortable taking responsibility for their own workload, resolving client queries and identifying issues before they become problems.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Managing bookkeeping for a varied portfolio of clients
  • Completing bank reconciliations and maintaining accurate ledgers
  • Processing purchase and sales invoices, receipts and payments
  • Preparing and reviewing VAT returns
  • Producing management information and supporting management accounts
  • Maintaining accurate debtor and creditor records
  • Investigating discrepancies and resolving bookkeeping queries
  • Liaising directly with clients to obtain information and clarify transactions
  • Supporting year-end accounts preparation by ensuring client records are complete and accurate
  • Reviewing bookkeeping work and identifying opportunities to improve processes
  • Assisting clients with accounting software and improving their day-to-day financial processes
  • Working closely with the wider accountancy team to ensure deadlines are met
  • Providing guidance to junior colleagues where appropriate

What We're Looking For

You'll ideally have several years of bookkeeping experience, preferably gained within an accountancy practice or professional services environment.
We're particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Strong end-to-end bookkeeping experience
  • Previous experience managing multiple clients or entities
  • Good knowledge of VAT and general accounting principles
  • Confidence completing reconciliations and investigating discrepancies
  • Experience preparing management information
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to manage competing deadlines and prioritise effectively
  • Strong communication skills and confidence dealing directly with clients
  • Good Excel skills
  • Experience with cloud accounting software such as Xero, Sage or QuickBooks
  • A proactive approach to identifying issues and finding practical solutions
  • The confidence to work independently while contributing positively to a wider team

A bookkeeping or accounting qualification would be advantageous, although relevant practical experience will be equally valued.

What's On Offer

  • Salary: £35,000-£40,000, depending on experience
  • Permanent, full-time position
  • Opportunity to work with a varied and interesting client base
  • Genuine client-facing responsibility
  • Supportive and collaborative working environment
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression
  • Exposure to management accounts, VAT and wider accounting work
  • Modern cloud-based accounting technology
  • The opportunity to build long-term client relationships rather than simply process transactions
