Semi Senior Accountant

£30,000 - £40,000 + bens - Full-time - Hitchin

Are you an experienced Semi Senior looking for a role where you can broaden your technical skills, build stronger client relationships and develop towards a more advisory-focused career?

We're working with a growing accountancy firm that places genuine importance on its people. The culture is supportive and progressive, with a strong emphasis on developing staff, sharing knowledge and giving individuals the opportunity to take on more responsibility as they grow.

The Opportunity

As a Semi Senior Accountant, you'll work across a varied portfolio of SME and owner-managed business clients, gaining broad exposure to accounts, tax and day-to-day client work.

The role is designed to give you a strong grounding in the core technical aspects of practice while gradually increasing your involvement in client advisory work. You'll have the opportunity to understand clients beyond their compliance requirements, develop commercial relationships and progress towards becoming a trusted adviser.

A key part of the position will also be supporting and mentoring junior colleagues, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys helping others develop.

What you'll be doing

  • Preparing year-end accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships
  • Preparing corporation tax and personal tax returns
  • Assisting with management accounts and VAT returns
  • Managing bookkeeping and accounting records for a portfolio of clients
  • Liaising directly with clients and responding to queries
  • Developing an understanding of clients' businesses and their wider financial objectives
  • Supporting senior colleagues with advisory and project-based work
  • Identifying opportunities to provide clients with additional support and advice
  • Reviewing work where appropriate and providing guidance to junior team members
  • Acting as a mentor and helping trainees and juniors develop their technical skills
  • Working with cloud accounting software including Xero and related applications
  • Supporting the wider team with process improvements and ad hoc assignments

What we're looking for

You'll ideally have several years of experience within a UK practice environment and be studying towards, or working towards, an AAT, ACCA or ACA qualification.

We're looking for someone who is technically capable but also wants to develop their commercial and advisory skills. You should enjoy speaking with clients, understanding their businesses and becoming more involved in the decisions behind the numbers.

You'll also bring:

  • Good experience preparing accounts and tax returns within practice
  • Knowledge of corporation tax, VAT and general compliance
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Confident communication skills
  • Experience using accounting software, ideally including Xero
  • A proactive approach to learning and development
  • The confidence and patience to support and mentor junior colleagues
  • A positive, collaborative attitude
  • Ambition to progress within a growing practice

Why consider it?

The accountancy firm has a genuine people-first culture, with staff development and job satisfaction viewed as an important part of its continued success.

You'll have the opportunity to develop technically while gradually taking on more client advisory responsibility, working alongside experienced professionals and gaining greater exposure to business owners.

The firm is continuing to grow, meaning there is scope to progress your career, take on greater responsibility and contribute to the development of both the client offering and wider team.

The package includes:

  • £30,000 - £40,000 salary
  • Ongoing training and CPD
  • Career progression opportunities
  • Regular team socials
  • Supportive team environment with direct access to senior leadership

The Hitchin team is looking for a motivated Semi Senior who wants to become more than a technical accounts preparer - someone who wants to develop into a confident client adviser while helping those around them progress too.
