About the role:

The Level 4 Building Services Technician Apprentice will support the Head of Engineering across all areas of the engineering function. This role provides a structured learning opportunity in the development, operation, and optimisation of heat network systems, with exposure to project management, asset performance, regulatory compliance, and innovation in energy technology. The apprentice will complete formal training aligned with the Building Services Engineering Technician Level 4 apprenticeship standard, while gaining hands-on experience across engineering and operational environments.

Most of the apprenticeship is spent working, you’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

Duties and responsibilities:

Technical Support and System Design

  • Assist in the review, development, and optimisation of heat network engineering systems, including mechanical, controls, and metering components.
  • Support the delivery of energy efficiency initiatives, decarbonisation strategies, and low-carbon technology adoption.
  • Contribute to the preparation and review of system designs, technical specifications, and plant performance models.

Project and Asset Management

  • Support the planning and execution of engineering projects from feasibility through to completion, including tracking timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Assist in managing and monitoring planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities across the asset portfolio.
  • Liaise with contractors and third-party service providers to review performance and ensure service level compliance.

Operational Performance and Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with the operations and maintenance teams to monitor and improve system performance, reliability, and resilience.
  • Participate in the collection and analysis of data to support key performance indicators (KPIs) and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of technical issues affecting network performance or customer service.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Support compliance activities aligned with health, safety, environmental, and heat network-specific regulations.
  • Participate in audits, site inspections, and risk assessments under the supervision of the Head of Engineering.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, codes of practice, and best-practice guidelines.

Learning and Development

  • Attend all scheduled off-the-job training and complete coursework associated with the Level 4 apprenticeship.
  • Engage in mentoring and structured learning from the Head of Engineering and wider technical teams.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, technical documentation, and team learning activities.

Location and working hours:

  • 4 days on-the-job working + 1 day at University per week.
  • 30-minute lunch break & two 15-minute breaks (unpaid) during each working day.
  • Office location: Moorgate, London (WeWork)
  • College: London South Bank University
  • Combination of office work, site visits, and external training.
  • Travel may be required across operational sites and training locations.
  • Occasional attendance at contractor meetings, commissioning reviews, or audits.

Required skills and attributes:

The candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Level 3 qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, Plumbing and Heating).
  • GCSE Grade 4/C or equivalent in English and Maths.
  • Interest in heat networks, building services, sustainability, and engineering innovation.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to follow complex instructions accurately.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

In addition, ideally the candidate will have:

  • Awareness of compliance regulations and health & safety practices in engineering.
  • Previous work experience or placement in an engineering, construction, or energy environment.
