The CAD/CAM Programmer role is responsible for delivering robust, efficient CNC programs for high-precision metal components manufactured on Multi axis CNC milling and Milturn machines. The role supports both internal production requirements and external customer projects, working with a wide range of materials including aluminum, copper, stainless steel and exotic alloys. This position plays a critical role in ensuring right-first-time manufacture, supporting challenging delivery schedules and solving complex machining problems in a high-pressure engineering environment.
CAD/CAM Programming
- Create, optimize and validate CNC programs for Multi axis CNC milling and Milturn machines
- Develop machining strategies for complex geometries and tight-tolerance parts
- Generate complete CAM documentation including tooling lists, setup sheets and machining sequences
- Simulate, verify and prove programs to eliminate collisions and minimize cycle times
- Select appropriate tooling and machining strategies for aluminum, copper, stainless steel and exotic materials
Manufacturing Support
- Support machining teams during prove-out, first-off and production runs
- Troubleshoot machining issues quickly and effectively to minimize machine downtime
- Work closely with production, quality and engineering teams to resolve technical challenges
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focusing on cycle time reduction, tool life and process stability
Customer & Project Support
- Support both internal and external customers with complex and bespoke machining requirements
- Contribute to new product introduction (NPI) and fast-turnaround projects
- Provide technical input to feasibility reviews, quotations and manufacturing planning
Problem Solving & Leadership
- Act as a technical resource for CAD/CAM and machining challenges
- Apply strong problem-solving skills to deliver solutions under time pressure
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality and consistency in all programming activities
Person Specification
- Degree or Diploma or Apprenticeship in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Production Engineering
- Previous experience in CAD/CAM Programmer in a high-precision environment
- Programming CNC milling and Milturn machines, including complex multi-axis work
- Machining aluminum, copper, stainless steel and exotic materials
- Strong proficiency of CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, Power Mill, Hyper Mill, NX or CATIA
- CNC Control knowledge of Mazatrol, Fanuc, Siemens or Heidenhain
- Excellent understanding of CNC machining principles, tooling and cutting parameters
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T
