I’m currently recruiting for a Principal Structural Engineer to take a leading role in establishing and growing a structural engineering capability in Nottingham. This is a senior, strategic position offering the opportunity to help shape a new team while remaining closely involved in technical delivery across a strong pipeline of building structures projects. Initially, you will also support an established Midlands team in Birmingham on a part-time basis, before transitioning into a Nottingham-based leadership role as the team develops.

The role suits someone who is comfortable working independently, taking ownership, and contributing to both technical delivery and business growth. You will be responsible for leading structural engineering delivery and helping to build and grow a regional capability.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Technical & Project Delivery
    • Lead the design and delivery of building structures projects from concept through to construction
    • Deliver or oversee multiple projects to programme and budget
    • Produce and review high-quality structural designs across steel, concrete, timber and masonry
    • Provide technical assurance and lead design reviews
    • Ensure compliance with Eurocodes and British Standards
    • Support construction-stage activities, including buildability advice
    • Carry out site inspections and structural surveys where required
  • Client & Commercial
    • Act as a key point of contact for clients, contractors and design teams
    • Build and maintain strong client relationships
    • Support fee proposals, bids and tender submissions
    • Contribute to identifying and developing new business opportunities
    • Develop project scopes and delivery programmes
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Help establish and grow the structural engineering presence in Nottingham
    • Support and mentor engineers across the wider Midlands team
    • Contribute to recruitment and development of the growing team
    • Promote a collaborative and high-performing team culture
    • Progress towards a Nottingham Structural / Studio Lead position

You will ideally have:

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng – MIStructE or MICE)
  • Significant experience in building structures design and delivery
  • Proven ability to lead projects from concept through to construction
  • Experience managing or leading design teams on medium to large projects
  • Strong technical capability across key structural materials
  • Good understanding of sustainable and low-carbon design approaches
  • Strong knowledge of Eurocodes, British Standards and construction processes
  • Proficiency with structural analysis/design software
  • Commercial awareness gained within a consultancy environment
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach with the ability to work independently
  • Leadership ambition and interest in building and growing a team
