Gas and Liquid Fuels Operations is a front-office function that delivers operational control under strict deadlines, playing a crucial role in supporting UK’s commercial objectives.
The Gas and LNG Operations team is responsible for managing the supply, demand, and trading logistics of gas across the UK and European markets. This includes ensuring timely execution of nominations, scheduling, capacity, and transportation requests within system limitations. The primary goal is to avoid financial penalties under the prevailing system regimes and to capture value through optimisation opportunities.
The team also oversees all operational and shipping activities linked to the delivery and ongoing management of Gas and LNG cargoes. Key responsibilities include issuing operational notifications to suppliers, coordinating with LNG terminal operators, agents, and pipeline operators, and ensuring accurate and timely entry of this data into internal systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate as part of the front-office Gas Operations team during core hours
- Engage with third parties, including counterparts, exchanges, brokers, and transmission system operators (TSOs).
- Execute daily operational tasks related to physical gas position management, logistics, and storage.
- Schedule gas flows at European hubs, border points, entry/exit points (IPs/VIPs), and storage sites, ensuring confirmation is received.
- Work closely with traders to balance positions through spot exchange trading (EEX, ICE) and capacity auctions (PRISMA, EUstream, Gemini).
- Monitor and support out-of-hours trading activities in accordance with pre-defined mandates.
- Develop commercial exposure by trading location spreads and contributing to the evolving gas portfolio strategy.
- Assist in optimising storage assets, regasification send-outs, and interconnector flows, including responding to curtailment or scaling notices.
- Support invoicing, settlement processes, and accurate position reporting.
- Identify arbitrage opportunities and communicate insights to the trading desk.
- Perform daily agency services for group entities.
- Support in drafting, reviewing, and implementing operational procedures.
- Collaborate with the IT desk to test and review new tools or system changes.
- Mentor and train new operators.
- Work closely with the Gas Trading team, gaining exposure to all aspects of the commercial lifecycle, and provide cross-cover under tight operational controls as the team grows.
- Remain flexible to carry out additional duties as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Gas Operations role is essential.
- Proven ability to articulate and explain the gas operations lifecycle.
- Familiarity with LNG terminal operations is a plus.
- Applied knowledge of the UK and European natural gas networks.
- Strong understanding of balancing mechanisms, day-ahead/intraday nomination deadlines, and matching processes
- Experience using key market platforms and portals (PRISMA, Trayport, WebICE, EEX, TSO portals).
- Front-office operations experience working under strict deadlines is advantageous.
- Commercially focused mindset with a strong grasp of optimisation levers.
- Strong Excel and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in additional European languages is a plus.
- Self-starter capable of delivering results independently.
- Ability to perform under pressure while maintaining high attention to detail.
- Strong numerical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communicator, confident in engaging with traders and stakeholders.
