Our client is a leading Tier 1 Main Contractor with a strong track record of delivering some of the UK's most complex and technically demanding construction projects. With a growing portfolio of industrial and mission-critical developments, they are seeking an experienced HSE Manager to support projects across the country.

This role offers the opportunity to work on flagship projects within a business that prioritises safety, quality, and operational excellence.

The Role

As HSE Manager, you will be responsible for driving a proactive health, safety and environmental culture across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with legislation, client requirements and company standards. This position requires significant travel and flexibility, with projects located throughout the UK. Candidates should be comfortable working away from home Monday to Friday when project requirements dictate. Accommodation covered by the company when required to work away.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and management of project-specific HSE programmes.
  • Promote a positive and proactive safety culture across all project teams and subcontractors.
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, safety observations and compliance reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Review risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work systems.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Support project teams during client audits and regulatory inspections.
  • Deliver HSE training, inductions, toolbox talks and awareness initiatives.
  • Monitor subcontractor HSE performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Produce regular reports, KPI analysis and management updates.

Essential Requirements (Must-Haves)

  • Proven experience within Health, Safety and Environmental management on major construction projects.
  • Strong construction or industrial project background with experience working in fast-paced, high-volume project environments.
  • Previous experience in a dedicated Health & Safety management role.
  • Experience working for a Main Contractor, General Contractor or Principal Contractor environment.
  • Excellent understanding of UK health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
  • Geographical flexibility and willingness to travel extensively across the UK, including projects in the South West, South, Midlands and Northern regions.
  • Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate (minimum).
  • IOSH Membership (or working towards professional accreditation).

Desirable Experience (Nice-to-Haves)

  • Previous experience on large-scale warehouse, logistics centre or "shed" construction projects.
  • Experience working on hyperscale data centre projects or major mission-critical developments.
  • Familiarity with AWS (Amazon) programmes and/or Hays-led project environments.
  • Experience working within multicultural and international project teams.
  • NEBOSH Diploma, CMIOSH or equivalent higher-level qualifications.
  • Previous military service or ex-forces background, particularly where this has supported leadership, safety or operational management capabilities.
