An NHS Trust in Essex is seeking an experienced Estates Mechanical Engineering Manager to join its Estates & Facilities team. This is a senior operational role with responsibility for maintaining and developing critical mechanical and building services across a large, complex acute healthcare estate. This position plays a key role in ensuring essential hospital services remain safe, compliant and operational 24/7, directly supporting patient care across multiple hospital sites.
The Role
Reporting to the Estates Operations Manager and Site Management, you will lead mechanical estates operations, overseeing planned preventative maintenance, reactive works and estates compliance. You will also contribute to capital projects, contractor management and emergency response arrangements, including participation in the estates on‑call rota.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and lead mechanical engineering services across healthcare sites, including PPM, reactive maintenance and installations
- Lead and support estates engineering teams, supervisors and apprentices, ensuring high standards of workmanship and safety
- Diagnose and resolve complex faults across mechanical, electrical and building services systems
- Act as an Authorised Person (or work towards AP status) for systems such as medical gases and ventilation
- Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, HTMs, ACOPs and Trust health & safety policies
- Respond to and manage estates emergencies, supporting major incident and business continuity arrangements
- Oversee contractors, permits to work, RAMS and quality assurance of works
- Provide technical input into capital projects, refurbishments and estate upgrades
- Support service improvement, sustainability initiatives and energy efficiency objectives
- Maintain accurate records using CAFM systems and produce reports as required
About You
- Qualified Mechanical Engineer (apprenticeship, ONC, HNC or equivalent)
- Significant hands‑on experience within estates or building services, ideally in a healthcare or critical environment
- Proven experience managing engineering teams and contractors
- Strong understanding of health & safety legislation and healthcare standards (HTMs)
- Confident decision‑maker with the ability to respond calmly under pressure
- IT literate with experience using CAFM systems and Microsoft Office
- Willing to participate in an estates management on‑call rota
