We are supporting an NHS Trust in Essex with the recruitment of an experienced Fire Safety Advisor (Band 7) to join their Estates & Facilities Directorate. The successful candidate will deliver expert fire safety management, provide professional guidance across the organisation, and support the ongoing development of a robust, compliant fire safety culture Trust‑wide.

As Fire Safety Advisor, you will play a central role in ensuring the safety of patients, staff and visitors through effective fire risk assessment, training, investigation, policy development and compliance oversight. Working closely with the Fire Safety Manager, you will help maintain a safe, resilient estate aligned with statutory requirements and NHS fire safety standards.

Key responsibilities:

  • Fire Risk Assessment & Compliance
    • Conduct and review complex fire risk assessments in line with the Trust’s risk‑based audit programme.
    • Prepare comprehensive reports, action plans and recommendations to drive safety improvements.
    • Ensure full compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, HTMs, and national best practice.
    • Monitor completion of fire safety actions and ensure close‑out of identified deficiencies.
    • Support the development and implementation of Trust‑wide fire policies, safety arrangements and procedural documents.
  • Training, Education & Culture
    • Contribute to the Fire Safety Training Needs Analysis and deliver statutory/mandatory fire safety training (face‑to‑face, virtual and e‑learning).
    • Promote a positive fire safety culture and support managers in fulfilling their responsibilities.
    • Develop innovative fire safety training resources and evaluate training effectiveness.
    • Provide advice and support to all levels of staff, including clinical, corporate and operational teams.
  • Incident Investigation & Reporting
    • Attend and investigate fire‑related incidents, including those involving significant damage, injuries or potential fatalities.
    • Produce detailed incident reports with root‑cause analysis and recommendations for improvement.
    • Support reduction of unwanted fire signals through proactive monitoring, data analysis and improvement initiatives.
  • Strategic & Operational Support
    • Support the Fire Safety Manager with Trust‑wide strategic planning and the development of improvement programmes.
    • Liaise with external stakeholders including Fire Authorities, Estates teams, refurb contractors and clinical governance groups.
    • Provide specialist technical advice for refurbishments, new builds and capital projects.
    • Assist in management of the fire safety budget and procurement of fire safety equipment.
  • Leadership, Governance & Communication
    • Communicate effectively with senior leaders, ensuring they understand their fire safety responsibilities.
    • Participate in clinical governance, audits, inspections and monitoring programmes.
    • Maintain up‑to‑date fire safety records, systems and performance data.
    • Demonstrate professional leadership, promoting equality, diversity and Trust values.

What we’re looking for:

  • Qualifications
    • Degree‑level education or equivalent fire safety competency (Fire Service College, FPA modules, or similar).
    • NEBOSH National Fire Certificate (Desirable).
    • Recognised Fire Risk Assessor qualification (Desirable).
    • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
    • Adult teaching qualification (Desirable).
  • Experience
    • Strong understanding of fire safety within healthcare or similarly complex environments.
    • At least two years’ experience working in a fire safety advisory role.
    • Experience delivering fire safety training across multiple formats.
    • Ability to undertake and document fire risk assessments to recognised standards.
    • Knowledge of fire safety legislation, national fire code guidance and best practice.
