We are seeking a reliable, hardworking and respectful Cemetery Grave Digging Operative to join a busy Local Authority Cemetery Services team based in DE7 4RA.
This is a physically demanding but highly rewarding role that plays an essential part in providing a dignified and professional burial service to the local community.
The successful candidate will be involved in grave excavation, cemetery maintenance and burial operations, working as part of a dedicated team committed to delivering a sensitive and respectful service during difficult times for bereaved families.
Key Responsibilities
- Excavate and prepare graves for burials using mechanical equipment and manual methods.
- Operate a 360 Mini Excavator safely and effectively.
- Backfill graves and reinstate cemetery grounds following burials.
- Assist with funeral and burial operations, ensuring services are conducted respectfully and professionally.
- Set up and remove burial equipment as required.
- Carry out general cemetery maintenance duties.
- Ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with health and safety procedures.
- Maintain equipment, tools and vehicles in good working order.
- Work effectively in all weather conditions.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience in grave digging or similar excavation, grounds maintenance or construction-related work.
- operating a 360 Mini Excavator.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding manual labour on a daily basis.
- Comfortable working in outdoor, muddy and dirty conditions throughout the year.
- Ability to cope with the emotional demands associated with funerals, burials and interaction with bereaved families.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to drive and tow a trailer confidently and safely.
- Good awareness of health and safety procedures.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a team.
