Are you in your penultimate year of study and looking to work in a fast paced, global, market leading company for your industrial placement? Here at Innovative Technology, we have an excellent opportunity for an Electronic Design Engineer Placement Student to join our talented Electronics team. This placement will be for a period of 12 months commencing in Summer 2026 and is an office-based role in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
The Role Overview
In this role you will be taking your theoretical knowledge and practical skills further in helping the engineers to design analogue, digital and opto-electronic systems for our state of the art cash handling products. Here at Innovative Technology, we have a history of successful placements and encourage our students to demonstrate their understanding of their specialist subject while getting invaluable industry experience. This position is suited to a student in their penultimate year of university who has an eagerness to learn and to make the most of an opportunity to experience working with professionals in their chosen field.
Your Responsibilities
- Assist the Design Engineers in all aspects of product development, from initial concept design to rapid prototyping of PCBs and final testing/verification of electronics hardware.
- Test and validate certain aspects of a new design as well as helping to resolve issues with old and new products.
- Assist in the electronic CAD design - schematic entry and PCB layout.
- Help with EMC and safety testing.
- Support our Component Engineers in helping to identify new components based on performance, cost and availability.
- Assist Design Engineers in verification testing and fault-finding of PCB prototypes and pre-production samples.
- Take ownership of some smaller prototype builds, ensuring it meets the design requirements and is completed on time.
- Take part in some offsite pre-compliance at the external EMC Test house.
- Contribute to the communication of certification/approval status to the rest of the business.
Your Skills & Experience
- Competent with lab equipment β Oscilloscopes, Multimeters, SMD soldering equipment.
- Some familiarity with Electronics CAD software (schematics and PCB layout).
- Be able to read through and understand analogue and digital circuits as well as electronic components and microcontroller datasheets.
- Have an appreciation of firmware especially in the way it interfaces with the electronics hardware especially with regards to comms and optical sensing.
- Be a good communicator and work well in a team with other engineers of other disciplines, asking questions and discussing your ideas when needed.
