About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer to join their multidisciplinary environmental and engineering team. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering technically robust and client-focused solutions across contaminated land, remediation, groundwater, and geotechnical projects. This role will involve taking ownership of projects from planning through to delivery, combining technical expertise, stakeholder engagement, and project management responsibilities. The successful candidate will work closely with regional teams and clients while supporting continued business growth and mentoring junior colleagues. This position offers a flexible hybrid working model with a combination of office, remote, and site-based activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Excellence
    • Produce and review Phase 1 and Phase 2 geo-environmental reports
    • Complete qualitative and quantitative risk assessments
    • Deliver technically robust interpretative reporting and contaminated land assessments
    • Provide technical guidance across geo-environmental and geotechnical projects
  • Project & Site Management
    • Plan, manage, and supervise ground investigations
    • Oversee groundwater and ground gas monitoring activities
    • Ensure site works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and project requirements
    • Coordinate site activities and manage project delivery timelines
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders
    • Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly and professionally
    • Deliver practical and commercially focused solutions to clients
  • Collaboration & Leadership
    • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary environmental and engineering teams
    • Support, mentor, and guide less experienced colleagues
    • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team culture
  • Commercial Awareness & Business Development
    • Support business development initiatives and client engagement activities
    • Contribute to strategic growth through high-quality project delivery and relationship management

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
  • Proven industry experience in contaminated land assessment and geo-environmental consultancy
  • Experience producing and reviewing Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports and risk assessments
  • Strong understanding of UK regulatory frameworks and contaminated land guidance
  • Experience planning and supervising ground investigations, including groundwater and gas monitoring
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong data interpretation and technical reporting capabilities
  • Good IT and project management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g. Master's degree)
  • Working towards Chartership with a recognised professional body such as CIWEM, IEMA, or the Geological Society
  • Site-related certifications such as CSCS or SMSTS
  • Experience supporting business development and client growth initiatives

Working Environment

  • Approximately 50% site-based work, primarily across Northern Ireland with occasional travel further afield
  • Expenses covered for work-related travel
