Consultant Mechanical Design Engineer – Hybrid (Dundee)
Contract: 12 Months | On-site: Minimum 3 Days per Week
Are you a senior mechanical design engineer with a proven track record of leading design teams and delivering complex, electromechanical systems? We’re looking for an experienced Consultant Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic product development team in Dundee on a 12-month contract.
This hybrid role requires a minimum of three days per week in the office and offers a rare opportunity to lead the mechanical development of cutting-edge media handling systems used in self-service technologies, including ATMs for the banking industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead mechanical design teams across the full product lifecycle – from concept to production support.
- Take ownership of mechanical development activities, providing accurate estimates and evaluating manufacturing options.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electronics, software, systems) to ensure seamless system integration.
- Drive cost-effective, fault-tolerant designs within tight performance and safety standards.
- Manage supplier engagement and engineering change processes.
- Oversee design validation through reviews, stress/tolerance analysis, testing and problem resolution (CLCA).
- Ensure all work is correctly documented and released using the approved systems.
Essential Experience:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
- 10+ years in mechanical product development, ideally in:
- High-speed document feeding and media transport systems.
- Fault-tolerant designs for climate-resilient, autonomous handling devices.
- Strong leadership in electro/mechanical design projects under software control.
- Deep understanding of fault-tolerant design for media systems where timing and data integrity are critical (e.g., video editing, broadcasting, cloud storage).
- Expertise in CAD tools such as ProE/Creo or SolidWorks.
- Practical experience in:
- Mechanism design and analysis.
- Mechanical drive systems.
- Stress and tolerance analysis.
- Rapid prototyping.
- Tooling and supplier liaison.
