Working as a core member of our Ports & Harbours team, you will provide marine consultancy services spanning areas such as navigational risk, vessel manoeuvring, port operations and marine governance.You will support our clients in meeting evolving regulatory requirements through expert consultancy services, including safety audits, marine risk assessments, and the development of safety management systems.Your work will help reduce risk across the port value chain and enhance operational resilience in complex marine environments.
What will you be doing?
- Plan and conduct port consultancy projects to optimise port operations and improve safety.
- Advise on port compliance with international and national legislation, the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC) and other applicable regulations through tailored audits and reviews.
- Support technical due diligence by evaluating infrastructure, safety systems, and operational readiness for new or modified ports and terminals.
- Conduct navigational and marine risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure safe, efficient port operations.
- Lead HAZID workshops and risk mitigation strategy development for port expansion, redevelopment, and construction projects.
- Develop and implement marine safety management systems (MSMS) and emergency response plans (ERP) for port operations.
- Deliver training on marine safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management to duty holders, port staff, and contractors.
- Prepare, coordinate, and participate in bidding to win work, either directly or through other group companies.
- Be actively involved in the development of business strategy, marketing, and implementation of the relevant business offering.
- Undertake appropriate fee earning assignments and maintain own level of billable utilisation above 70%.
- Other duties which may include attendance at marine incidents.
What are we looking for?
Ideally, you will have an STCW Officer of the Watch qualification and possess experience as a Deputy Harbour Master or Marine Pilot. You might also be looking to take your first step into marine consultancy. More specifically, we are looking for the following:
- 7 + years relevant marine experience.
- 2 + years specialist experience in a relevant ports and harbours role such as Harbour Master, Pilot and / or VTS Operator.
- STCW OOW or equivalent (e.g. Naval Officer) certification or educated to degree level in a marine-related discipline.
- Harbour Master’s diploma or certificate.
- An ISO accredited auditor qualification and experience working as a Port Security Officer is beneficial.
- A thorough understanding of the PMSC and the accompanying guide, exposure to maritime claims and insurance, and familiarity with the legal and regulatory framework relevant to UK ports is beneficial
- Strong grasp of the operational, navigational, and commercial aspects of ports and shipping is beneficial.
